Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Byron Wiley drilled a grand slam home run and Josh Ravin allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings as the Dayton Dragons exploded for a 13-0 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts on Sunday afternoon. The season's second largest crowd of 9,365 saw the Dragons most one-sided win of the season.
The Dragons, who collected just 17 runs in eight games on the road trip that ended Saturday night, blew open a 2-0 game with seven runs in the fifth inning, keyed by Wiley's grand slam with no one out. It was the first bases loaded home run for a Dragons player this season.
The Dragons snapped a four-game losing streak with the win and improved their record to 25-38. They have won four of five games this season with Lansing. The Lugnuts fell to 23-39 with the loss.
Ravin (3-7) struck out a season-high eight batters over six innings. Both hits against Ravin were infield singles. Mark James fired three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, to earn his first save.
The Dragons got the scoring started in the second inning. Dave Sappelt tripled to right field with one out to start the rally. After a walk to Byron Wiley, Jake Long hit a hard ground ball to second baseman Justin McClanahan, who threw to second to get the force on Wiley. But the throw to first by shortstop Tyler Pastornicky was low and skipped past the first baseman as Sappelt scored to make it 1-0.
Dayton scored again in the third when Miguel Rojas walked, went to second on Andrew Means' sacrifice, stole third, and scored on a double to left by Cody Puckett to make it 2-0.
In the fifth, the Dragons loaded the bases with no one out before Puckett was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Carlos Mendez followed with a double to right to drive in two more. After Sappelt walked to load the bases, Wiley followed with a home run to right-center, his third homer of the year, to make it 9-0.
The Dragons added a single run in the seventh and Sappelt drilled a three-run home run in the eighth to close out the scoring.
The offensive explosion was welcomed by the Dragons, who hit just .194 over the eight-game road trip. Dayton finished with 13 hits. Wiley, Mendez, Sappelt, and Kevin Coddington each had two hits.
The Dragons host the Lugnuts again Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Curtis Partch (4-4, 4.73) will start for the Dragons against Chase Lirette (2-0, 1.63).
