Kernel Rally Comes Up Short, 5-4

July 28, 2009 - Gabe Jacobo hit a long fly out to end the game with the tying and winning runs on base as the Kernels fell to the Kane County Cougars, 5-4, in front of 3,773 fans on Tuesday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. One run has decided seven of the Kernels last nine games and the Kernels are 1-6 in those games.

Alexi Amarista had three of the Kernels 10 hits, going 3-5 with a stolen base. Dwayne Bailey went 1-4 with a double and 2 RBI and Beau Brooks was 2-3 with two runs scored. Kernels starter Manuarys Correa (6-6) allowed five runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out one over 4.1 innings.

Vladimir Veras, Kyle Hurst and Nick Pugliese combined for 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Kane County starter Anvioris Ramirez (1-0) allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits and struck out five over 5.2 innings and Justin Murray worked around a hit and walk in the ninth for his ninth save.

Game two between the Kernels and Cougars is Wednesday night at 6:35 pm. The first 1,000 fans through the gates when they open at 5:30 pm receive a free magnet of former Kernel and current San Francisco Giants catcher, Ben Molina, courtesy Xquisite Lim, Mix 96.5 FM and WMT AM 600.
