SORENSEN COMPLETELY MASTERFUL
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Mark Sorensen became the second West Michigan Whitecaps' pitcher to throw a complete game in 2009 as the Whitecaps throttled the Burlington Bees, 7-2, on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. Sorensen improves to 8-2 on the year as he extends his winning streak to a league-leading eight games .
Mark Sorensen had the look of a maestro out on the mound Tuesday night. The right hander directed the Whitecaps through nine innings of seven-hit baseball. Sorensen gave up 2 runs, but he did not walk a batter, and he struck out five.
West Michigan put up three runs in the first inning on Brandon Douglas' RBI single and Billy Nowlin's two-run home run. The home run was Nowlin's eighth, and the Whitecaps lead was 3-0.
Leading 4-1 the Whitecaps put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with three more runs. Billy Nowlin walked, Bryan Pounds doubled him to third, and Jordan Lennerton doubled home both runners. Joe Bowen came through with a sacrifice fly and the âCaps were ahead, 7-1.
Burlington tallied a run in the sixth on an RBI ground out by Adrian Ortiz as Patrick Norris scored.
Bees' starter Sam Runion was largely ineffective, giving up 11 hits in 6 innings while surrendering 7 earned runs with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. The loss makes his overall record 3-7.
