West Michigan Strikes First In Three-Game Series

Comstock Park, MI (July 28, 2009) - The Burlington Bees opened their ten-game road-trip with a 7-2 loss at West Michigan Tuesday night. Shawn Griffin had two doubles in the game but it was not enough as the Bees lost the series opener to the White Caps.

West Michigan scored three runs in the first inning and one in the third to take a 4-0 lead. The Bees put their first run on the board in the fifth inning. Griffin led the inning off with a double and then moved to third on a ground-out. Yeldrys Molina drove Griffin home with an RBI ground-out. The Whitecaps answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead. The Bees scored the final run of the day in the top of the sixth inning. Patrick Norris led the inning off with a triple and then scored on an Adrian Ortiz RBI ground-out.

Sam Runion got the start for the Bees and took the loss to move to 3-7 on the season. Runion allowed seven runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Blaine Hardy pitched the final two innings allowing just one base-runner, who reached on an error. Hardy had two strikeouts and no walks.

The Bees were outhit 11-7. Griffin was the only Bee with more than one hit as he went 2-4 with a run scored. Both of his hits were doubles.

The Bees continue the three-game series with West Michigan Wednesday night. Tim Melville is the scheduled starter. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 and the game can be heard on News-Radio 1490 KBUR and online at www.GoBees.com. The Bees will return home for a four-game series with Quad Cities on Friday, August 7th.
