MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons took advantage of four errors by the Beloit Snappers to grab an early lead on their way to an 8-5 win in the opener of a six-game homestand at Dow Diamond. After getting swept at Quad Cities, the Loons won for the ninth time in 11 second half games on their home field in front of another sellout crowd of 5,442 on Tuesday night.

Tony Delmonico homered, doubled and drove in three runs, while Jaime Pedroza reached base all four times he batted and scored three runs. Pedroza also stole three bases and drove in a run with a double.

The first of Pedroza's stolen bases came as part of a double steal in the bottom of the first inning. Kyle Russell struck out on a 3-2 pitch for the second out of the inning with Pedroza and Anthony Hatch both on the move. Beloit catcher Danny Rams threw to second base to try and gun down Hatch, but no Snapper covered the bag and the throw sailed into center field. Pedroza scored for a 1-0 lead, and Delmonico followed with his eighth homer of the year to give Great Lakes an early 3-0 lead.

The Loons added two more runs in the fifth, again with some help from the Snappers poor defense. Back-to-back doubles by Matt Wallach and Clay Calfee leading off the inning made it a 4-0 game, and later in the inning the Loons attempted another double steal with Dee Gordon and Pedroza on base. This time, Rams threw to an unoccupied bag at third and the throw went into left allowing Gordon to score the Loons fifth run.

After Beloit scratched out a single run in the fourth, the Loons put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with two more runs to chase Snappers' starter Brad Tippett. Dee Gordon led off with a bunt single to third and raced all the way around to third when Ramon Santana threw wildly past first base. Gordon scored easily on a double by Pedroza, and three batters later Delmonico plated Pedroza with a two-out bloop double to center for a 7-1 advantage.

Beloit scored three runs off Loons starter JonMichael Redding in the sixth to cut the deficit in half, but Redding retired Dominic De La Osa on a pop out to leave runners at the corners and preserve a 7-4 lead.

Redding (12-3) won his 12th game of the season and matched the Loons franchise record for career victories, going six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. Steve Smith gave up the Snappers final run in his second inning of work in the eighth, and Cole St. Clair notched his seventh save of the year by working a scoreless ninth.

Tippert (8-4) took the loss for Beloit, allowing seven runs (three earned) on eight hits in 4.2 innings on the mound.

The Loons and Snappers are back in action at Dow Diamond on Wednesday night for the middle game of the series. Right-hander Josh Walter (6-3, 3.33) starts for Great Lakes against righty Daniel Berlind (3-9, 4.50) of Beloit. Milt Wilcox will be at the ballpark to meet fans and sign autographs as part of the Loons' season-long celebration of the Detroit Tigers 1984 World Championship team. Wilcox's appearance is presented by MidMichigan Health.
