Kane County Cougars News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars began a season-high 10-game road trip Tuesday night and did so in winning fashion. They beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-4, in front of 3,773 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Anvioris Ramirez picked up his first win as a Cougar, three players had two hits and five drove in a run. The Cougars, who snapped a six-game losing streak Monday, have won consecutive games for the first time since they won three straight July 10-12.
The Cougars never trailed. Mike Spina nailed an RBI single in the first inning against Manaurys Correa (6-6), and Franklin Hernandez plated Steve Parker with a fielder's choice to make it 2-0. Ramirez got touched for two runs in the second, but the Cougars answered with Chris Berroa's fourth-inning RBI single. Then in the fifth Petey Paramore brought in Dusty Coleman, and Jeremy Barfield's sacrifice fly scored Parker to make it 5-2.
Ramirez (1-0) allowed two unearned runs in the sixth and left before the inning ended. He ceded four runs -- two earned -- on nine hits, walked none and fanned five in the win. A.J. Huttenlocker struck out four in 2 1/3 hitless innings, and Justin Murray handled the ninth for his ninth save.
The Cougars (15-16, 56-45) and Kernels (17-13, 57-43) play the middle contest of their three-game series Wednesday night at 6:35 CT. Mathieu Leblanc-Poirier (2-4, 5.33) is scheduled to pitch against Buddy Boshers (0-0, 10.80).
