Keller Earns First Triple-A Win as Indians Sweep 'Pigs

August 9, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - Jacob Stallings and Pablo Reyes combined for a trio of two-out RBI singles, Mitch Keller delivered his first quality start and Triple-A victory and the Indians completed a three-game sweep over the IronPigs on Thursday night with a 3-1 triumph. The Tribe have won 22 of their last 30 home games and are a season-high 14 games over .500.

Reyes' clutch knock off Tom Eshelman (L, 2-11) in the sixth broke a 1-1 tie and set Keller up for his first win in six starts for Indianapolis (65-51). Kevin Newman doubled with one away in the decisive frame and trotted home when Reyes won a seven-pitch battle by singling through the right side of the infield.

Buddy Boshers (H, 1), claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh from Houston on Tuesday, tossed a scoreless seventh in his Pirates organization debut and Steven Brault (H, 1) retired all four batters he faced - three on strikeouts - before a nail-biting finish.

Stallings' second single of the night brought home Newman for an eighth-inning insurance run. Newman had singled and reached second base on a Jason Martin comebacker before hustling home for Indy's final tally.

Following Brault's third punchout, Alex McRae (S, 1) was summoned for the save chance with the bases empty and one out in the ninth. The IronPigs (70-46) proceeded to load the bases on a single and two walks, but McRae struck out Jesmuel Valentin on a 3-2 pitch to seal the win.

Indy led 1-0 after one inning of play thanks to Stallings' first two-out, run-scoring single. Martin scored on the play, but the 'Pigs evened the game in the second on a two-out double by Zach Green.

Keller (W, 1-2) kept the visitors in check the rest of the way and punctuated his outing in the sixth with consecutive strikeouts of Joey Meneses and Dylan Cozens, the International League's No. 1 and No. 3 home run leaders. He allowed four hits and walked just one while striking out six.

Newman scored two of the Tribe's three runs, extending his league-high run total to 73. He ranks second in the IL with 129 hits and is fourth in average .305.

The three-game sweep was Indy's fifth of the season and just its second in an 11-year history with Lehigh Valley, the other coming in May 2015 at The Vic.

The 'Pigs had been swept just one other time in 2018 - May 15-17 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Indians continue their homestand with the opener of a three-game series against the Pawtucket Red Sox on Friday night at 7:15 p.m. EDT. Left-hander Brandon Waddell (4-6, 4.82) will face right-hander William Cuevas (8-6, 3.45).
