Mud Hens Fall to Red Wings in Rubber Match

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Toledo Mud Hens were defeated by the Rochester Red Wings 14-3 in a rubber match on Thursday evening at Frontier Field.

The Mud Hens (59-56) managed just four hits, three of which were doubles, in the loss to the Red Wings (52-62).

The Red Wings jumped on the board first scoring four runs in the first inning. Taylor Motter led off with a solo home run to left field on the second pitch he saw. With one out, Kennys Vargas scored Nick Gordon on a sacrifice fly to right field. Jon Kemmer then blasted a two-run bomb to center field to give Rochester a 4-0 lead.

With two outs and two runners on in the second inning, Tyler Austin tattooed the first pitch of the at-bat for the Red Wings third homer of the game. After two innings, Rochester led 7-0.

In a bullpen game, Hens starter Phillipe Aumont handed the ball to Paul Voelker after two innings. Aumont suffered his fourth loss of the campaign allowing seven earned runs on four hits while walking three and recording two strike outs. Three of the four hits Aumont allowed were home runs.

Toledo got on the board in the third inning. Harold Castro led off with a double and was brought in by Kade Scivicque who followed suit with a double of his own.

In the third inning Rochester continued its hot hitting. Vargas doubled and was brought in on a fielding error by Dawel Lugo. With one out, Jeremy Hazelbaker launched a two-run home run over the left field fence giving the Red Wings an 11-1 advantage heading into the fourth.

Austin tripled to lead off the fourth inning and was brought in on a sacrifice fly by Vargas giving Rochester an 11-run lead.

Voelker made his exit after two innings of work allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits and two walks. Kevin Comer entered in relief of Voelker to pitch the fifth inning.

Jacob Robson led off the sixth inning with a walk and was brought in on a double by Lugo. Lugo advanced to third on a deep fly out by Mikie Mahtook and scored on a wild pitch that earned Jason Krizan a walk. After five and one-half innings Toledo trailed 12-3.

In the bottom half of the inning, Willians Astudiool was hit by a pitch with one out. Kennys Vargas then lifted an 0-1 pitch over the center field fence to give the Red Wings its fifth home run of the game and a 14-3 advantage.

Zac Houston entered to pitch the seventh inning, replacing Comer who allowed two earned runs on three hits while fanning three in two innings of work. Houston walked two and struck out one without allowing a hit in one inning of work before handing the ball to Johnny Barbato. Barbato delivered a scoreless eighth inning allowing no hits and punching out one.

What's Next:

The Mud Hens remain on the road as they travel to Buffalo to face the Bisons. First pitch from Coca-Cola field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Friday evening.

Hens Notes:

- The Mud Hens fall to 5.5 games back from West Division-leading Indianapolis.

- The 11-run loss marks the largest margin of defeat for Toledo this season.

- 14 runs are the most the Mud Hens have allowed this season. The previous high was 12 by Indianapolis on August third.

- Rochester's five home runs is the most any team has hit against Toledo in a single game this season. Indianapolis hit three on June 14 which was the previous best.

- Toledo's 14 strikeouts ties a season high for strikeouts in a game.
