Kalamazoo Wings News Release
The K-Wings started off the week on Friday (3/24) on the road against the Quad City Mallards. In a see-saw game that had a combined 12 goals scored between the two teams; the Mallards would prevail over the K-Wings by the final score of 7-5. Defenseman Greg Labenski led all K-Wings in scoring with three points (1 goal and 2 assists). Quad City were led by J.J. Wrobel and Frank Littlejohn, who combined for eight points. Wrobel netted three goals and added an assist, while Littlejohn scored once and assisted on three Mallard tallies. The lost to Quad City snapped a six-game winning streak at The Mark for Kalamazoo.
On Saturday (3/25), the K-Wings finished off the week with a road game in Muskegon against the Fury. Kalamazoo exploded for three-goals in the opening period and never looked back, as the K-Wings defeated the two-time defending Colonial Cup Champions 6-0. Joel Martin rewrote history by stopping 30 shots to record his UHL record breaking ninth shutout of the season. Offensively, the K-Wings were led by Nick Bootland, who had a game-high two goals and added an assist. The victory by Kalamazoo clinched a birth in the upcoming UHL Colonial Cup Playoffs.
Fast Forward
The Kalamazoo Wings will hit the ice four times this week, starting Wednesday (3/29), as the Flint Generals come to Wings Stadium for a 7 p.m. face-off. The K-Wings are 6-0-0 against the Generals this season. Flint starts the week in fourth place in the Central Division. The K-Wings and the Generals will meet again on Saturday (4/1) at the Perani Hockey World & Event Center.
On Friday (3/31), the K-Wings end the month of March on the road against the Muskegon Fury. The battle against the Fury will be the last in the regular season between the teams. Kalamazoo is 6-3-1 against Muskegon on the year. The Fury lead both the Central Division and the UHL by three points over the K-Wings.
On Sunday (4/2), the K-Wings will conclude week and their three-game road trip against the Motor City Mechanics. On the season, Kalamazoo has a record of 4-2-1 against Motor City. The Mechanics start the week in third place in the Central Division and they are riding a league best seven-game winning streak.
Playoff Bound
By winning Saturday night, the K-Wings have clinched a birth in the 2005-06 Colonial Cup Playoffs. This marks the quickest the K-Wings have clinched a UHL postseason birth.
Record Breaking Performance
Goaltender Joel Martin set the UHL record for most shutouts in a single-season by recording his ninth shutout of the season on March 25th against the Muskegon Fury. Martin broke the record previous held by former K-Wing Chad Alban and current Fort Wayne Komet Kevin St. Pierre, who originally established the record during the 2003-04 season.
Off to a Good Start
The K-Wings have outscored their opponents 102-40 in the first period this season. The margin of +62 is the largest scoring margin in the opening period in the UHL.
Big Willy Style
Forward Tyler Willis is currently on a nine-game assist streak. The nine-game streak is the longest assist streak in the United Hockey League and it is also a K-Wings season high. Willis is also nearing a personal milestone. Willis needs two more points to reach 300 for his career.
The Obscure Stat of the Week
On the season, goaltender Joel Martin is 8-0-2 in games he starts after suffering a loss. Besides the 8-0-2 record, Martin has a goals against average of 1.20, a save percentage of .956 and four shutouts in games after suffering a loss.
