Goaltenders continue to shine
March 27, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release
LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO --- Although scoring has been up in the United Hockey League (UHL) this season, goaltenders made the biggest impact during the week. Kalamazoo Wings goaltender Joel Martin etched his name into the UHL record book when he recorded his ninth shutout of the season on Saturday. He stopped all 30 Muskegon shots in the 6-0 win. Martin broke the mark of eight shared by Fort Wayne's Kevin St. Pierre and former Kalamazoo goaltender Chad Alban who both set the record in the 2003-04 season. Martin leads UHL goaltenders with a 2.21 goals against average (GAA) and is tied for the league lead with a .921 save percentage (SPCT). He has been especially tough after a regulation loss this season. In games following a regulation defeat, he has a 8-0-2 record with a 1.20 GAA, a .956 SPCT, and has registered four shutouts.
Fort Wayne's Kevin St. Pierre stopped all 30 Rockford shots in Saturday's 6-0 win to earn his fifth shutout of the season. The shutout, which was the 20th of his UHL career, extended his league leading career mark. The win was also the 100th for St. Pierre in a Fort Wayne uniform. He currently ranks second among UHL goaltenders with a 2.29 GAA and has moved into a tie with Martin for a league best .921 SPCT.
Motor City's Rod Branch recorded his third shutout of the season when he stopped all 35 Flint shots in Friday's 5-0 win. He then went on to break the team record he set last season by appearing in his 64th game of the season on Sunday. Branch also earned his 36th win of the season in the 4-3 victory over Muskegon. That win total leads the UHL and is the most in the league since the 2003-04 season when St. Pierre collected 43 wins.
Adirondack's Kris Tebbs also got into the shutout act on Saturday when he turned away all 21 Richmond shots in the 4-0 win. It was his first shutout of the season. Elmira's Matt Meacham was signed on March 15th and earned two victories in his first two starts for the team during the week. He made 37 saves on both Friday and Saturday to earn victories over Adirondack (5-2) and Roanoke Valley (6-4).
McMASTER WRAPS UP TOUR - Molly McMaster completed her tour of the UHL on Sunday when she suited up for the Roanoke Valley Vipers. She took the ice for all 14 teams as a part of the UHL Cross-Checks Colon Cancer campaign in March. The President and Co-Founder of The Colon Club visited each city to spread awareness of colon cancer. McMaster managed to get her name into the score sheet when she was whistled for a misconduct penalty in the first period.
CONTRIBUTING AT THE NEXT LEVEL - Multiple players have earned call-ups to the American Hockey League (AHL) this season and are quickly contributing to their new clubs. Danbury center Mike Omicioli has recorded five points (1g, 4a) in three games since being assigned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on March 22nd. He registered a three-point (1g, 2a) game on Sunday vs. Springfield which included the game-winning goal.
Rockford IceHogs winger Chaz Johnson was called-up to the Milwaukee Admirals on March 21st. In his second game of the week, he netted his first AHL goal in Milwaukee's 4-1 victory vs. Manitoba on Friday.
