Elmira Jackals News Release
Week 23 Game Results:
3/24/06 Adirondack 2 @ Elmira 5
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals roughed up the Adirondack Frostbite 5-2 to snap a 7-game home winless streak Friday night at the First Arena.
With the Jackals desperate for a home win, Adirondack's David Moccia put the Frostbite ahead at 8:29 when he slipped a shot past Jackals goalie Matt Meacham. But Elmira got it back with only seconds to spare. Jason Sessa scored his 18th goal of the season at 19:54, assisted by Konstantin Kalmikov and Flo Iberer to tie the game at one.
In the second period the Jackals played stingy defense and won the special teams battle to score the only goal of the period. Jarrett Konkle finished off a two-on-one pass from Trevor Burgess to score a short-handed goal, his third shorty of the year, at 5:16. The goal was Konkle's team-leading 30th of the season, assisted by Burgess and Kalmikov for a 2-1 lead after two period. Konkle becomes the first Jackal to reach 30 goals this year and the second Elmira player with 30 or more goals in the past two seasons.
But Konkle was not done yet. He gave Elmira some insurance, scoring just 59 seconds into the third period, assisted by Sessa and Mathieu Wathier for a 3-1 Elmira lead. Ryan Prentice brought one back for the visitors with a disputed goal at 12:22, one that the Jackals argued never crossed the goal line. But Elmira answered almost immediately. Flo Iberer bombed a one-timer past goalie Kris Tebbs just 17 seconds later at 12:39, Iberer's 2nd goal of the season, assisted by Kevin Cooper and Craig MacDonald. Jason Sessa then capped off the third period rout with his second goal of the night at 14:01, assisted by Kalmikov and Konkle for a 5-2 victory.
Matt Meacham earned his first win in his first start in a Jackals uniform, making 37 saves on 39 shots in an outstanding performance in goal for Elmira. Adirondack's Kris Tebbs took the loss, stopping 27-of-32 shots. Elmira was 0-for-3 on the power play, while Adirondack finished 0-for-5.
3/25/06 Elmira 6 @ Roanoke 4
Roanoke, VA - The Elmira Jackals scored three third period goals to beat the Roanoke Valley Vipers 6-4 Saturday night at the Roanoke Civic Center.
Fresh off their first home win in regulation since January 21st, the Jackals stormed into Roanoke with renewed confidence. Konstantin Kalmikov put Elmira in front early as he scored at 4:56 of the 1st period, assisted by Jason Sessa and Sam Paolini. Roanoke's Matt Elich scored an unassisted, short-handed goal at 10:25 to tie the game at one. Elmira answered with a short-handed goal of their own, scored by Kevin Cooper at 16:04 for a 2-1 lead. But Jan Jas scored the third unassisted goal of the period to level the score 2-2 at 18:42. Roanoke out-shot Elmira 23-9 in the first period, but the outstanding play of Jackals goalie Matt Meacham was the difference in the game.
In the second period Alex Jerofejevs gave Roanoke their only lead of the game, a power play goal at 5:12. But the Jackals struck back when Kalmikov scored his second goal of the game at 7:03, assisted by Paolini and Carl Drakensjo, tying the game at three.
Elmira blew the game wide open in the third period, scoring three more times in a row. First Craig MacDonald put the Jackals in the lead 4-3 with a goal at 2:04 from Cooper and John Donnelly. Jarrett Konkle made it 5-3 at 9:41, assisted by Jason Sessa and Bobby Gates, Konkle's 32nd goal of the season. Anthony Blumer scored the Jackals' 6th goal of the game at 17:11, tipping a shot from Trevor Burgess in for a power play goal; Burgess and Chris Chaput getting assists. Roanoke scored a late consolation goal at 18:50 from John Osborne to finish the scoring at 6-4.
Matt Meacham earned his 2nd straight win, and is a perfect 2-for-2 while starting for the Jackals, making 37 saves on 41 shots. Shawn Conschafter stopped 24-of-30 in the loss for Roanoke.
3/26/06 Elmira 5 @ Roanoke 6
Roanoke, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers scored three times in the third period as they beat the Elmira Jackals 6-5 Sunday afternoon at the Roanoke Civic Center.
Going into the game with only 12 healthy skaters and two goaltenders, the short-staffed Vipers put some early pressure on Elmira. But after a sluggish opening three minutes, the Jackals turned the tables. Chris Chaput put the Jackals on the board with a one-timer that zipped past goaltender Glenn Ridler at 4:46 of the first period. Chaput's 24th goal, and team leading 60th point, was set up by a great pass from Sam Paolini and Trevor Burgess. Elmira seized momentum and continued to dominate the play, out-shooting Roanoke 16-8 by period's end. Playing in the final game of her League-wide promotion to raise Colon Cancer Awareness, Molly McMaster earned her 14th UHL start. She also put her on the score sheet for the first time, earning a 10-minute misconduct at 1:00 of the period.
In the second period Mike Wiggins tied the game with a goal at 1:37, seemingly catch the visitors off guard. Elmira retook the lead at 6:20 when captain Trevor Burgess ripped a shot from the point off the goal post and in for a power play goal, assisted by Chaput and Flo Iberer. The Vipers then got two goals from Jan Jas, at 10:49 and 14:12, which put Roanoke ahead 3-2. The Jackals Captain continued to impress, scoring his second power play goal of the period at 16:04, assisted by Jason Sessa and Konstantin Kalmikov. The goal was Burgess' 6th goal of the season, tying the game at three after forty minutes.
In the third period Roanoke scored three straight goals as they blew the game wide open. Mark Scott scored at 4:28 to regain the lead. Alex Jerofejevs shot in a power play goal at 9:18 to make it 5-3 Vipers. Then Mike Wiggins scored a short-handed goal at 10:41, extending Roanoke's lead to 6-3. But Elmira made things interesting in the final five minutes. Konstantin Kalmikov snapped a wrist-shot past Ridler at 15:07, assisted by Burgess and Paolini to stop the bleeding. 33 seconds later Carl Drakensjo tipped home a pass from Kevin Cooper and all of a sudden it was 6-5. Cooper and Chaput assisted on Drakensjo's 5th goal of the year, which came at 15:40 of the third period. Elmira pounded the Roanoke net in the final four minutes, but the Vipers narrowly clung to the lead, earning a 6-5 win.
Glenn Ridler got the win, making 33 saves on 38 shots in goal for Roanoke. Matt Meacham took the loss for Elmira, stopping 20-of-26 shots. Elmira was 2-for-5 on the power play; Roanoke finished 1-for-2.
Jackals Player & Goaltender of the Week: (Week 23)
Konstantin Kalmikov - C 3 GP, 3 goals, 4 assists, 7 points, +5, 2 PIMs
Konstantin Kalmikov earns the Jackals Player of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks. The 27-year old put up a 7-point (3 goals, 4 assists), +5 performance this week. Friday night against Adirondack Kalmikov had 3 assists in Elmira's first home win since Valentine's Day. Saturday in Roanoke, the Kharkov, Ukraine native scored two goals in Elmira's 6-4 win. Sunday he added a goal and an assist to cap off another very successful week, where he tallied 18 shots on goal in three games. His 12 points in the past two weeks has put him over the 50-point mark for the year.
Matt Meacham - G 3 GP, 2-1-0, 4.02 GAA, 0.887 SV%, 94 saves
Rookie goalie Matt Meacham earned his first Goaltender of the Week nomination. In his first two starts in a Jackals' uniform he got the wins, beating Adirondack Friday night with a 37 save effort and then going to Roanoke and earned the two points with 37 saves on 41 shots. Going for the weekend sweep on Sunday, Meacham didn't fare as well; making 20 saves in a 6-5 loss to the Vipers. On the week he posted a 4.02 GAA and a 0.887 save percentage, while facing 106 total shots in three games.
JACKAL BITES:
- SEASON-ENDING TRAGEDY - Rookie defenseman Chris Mann suffered a season-ending injury during Thursday's practice, breaking his jaw while lying down to block a shot. Mann leads both the Jackals and the UHL in minor penalties and, at the time of his injury, was 2nd in the League in PIMs with 313 minutes.
- MORE HONORABLE MENTIONS - Though Konstantin Kalmikov was the player of the week for the second straight week, his two line mates and his captain all had great weeks. D Trevor Burgess had 6 points (2 goals, 4 assists) and was +4 this week, RW Jason Sessa also had 6 points (2 goals, 4 assists) and was +1, while LW Jarrett Konkle had 4 points (3 goals, 1 assists) and was +5 on the weekend.
- TRIPLE THREAT - The Jackals line of Kalmikov, Konkle and Sessa again led the way offensively for Elmira. They combined for 17 points (8 goals, 9 assists) and were +11 between the three of them.
- MAGIC NUMBER FADING - Despite winning two-of-three this weekend, Elmira's playoff chances continued to fade. Due to Quad City's 2-0-1 weekend, coupled with Elmira's loss on Sunday, the Jackals need to win their final 9 games, and hope that the Mallards finish, at best, 0-8-1 to force an 8th place tie.
- THE HALF-CENTURY - The Jackals scored 16 goals in three games and now have 5 players with 50 or more points and one player with 47 points this season. Chris Chaput passed the 60-point mark over the weekend, while Jarrett Konkle, Konstantin Kalmikov, Kevin Cooper and Jason Sessa have all reached 50 points for the season. In 2004-05 Elmira had just 3 players with 50 or more points.
- REACHING 30 ISN'T SO BAD - RW Jarrett Konkle scored three goals this week, giving him a team best 32 goals for the year. He is just the second Jackals' player to reach the 30-goal mark in the last two seasons; Jason Sessa had 34 goals in 2004-05.
