Kalamazoo Wings Week In Review

The K-Wings started the week on Friday (1/20) at home against the Fort Wayne Komets. Fort Wayne used a trapping defense and opportunistic scoring chances to defeat the Kalamazoo 4-1. The K-Wings lone goal was scored by Lucas Drake (10), which at the time made the score 2-1 in favor of the Komets. Fort Wayne added two empty net goals in the final two minutes of play to wrap up the game's scoring.

Rivalry weekend continued on Saturday (1/21), when the K-Wings hosted the Muskegon Fury. The game proved to be a see-saw battle with Kalamazoo owning the first period, by scoring the period's lone two goals. Muskegon answered back with two goals of their own in the second period. In the final period, each team traded a goal, which forced the game into a shootout. In the extra session, the Fury would outlast the K-Wings by outscoring them 3 goals to 2 to get the 4-3 victory.

The K-Wings concluded the weekend with a Sunday (1/23) contest in Port Huron against the Flags. Kalamazoo used an explosive power-play, which went 3 for 10 on the night and a three point outing from Kory Karlander (1 goal, 2 assists) to skate past Port Huron 5-1.


Fast Forward

Coming off the All-Star Break, the Kalamazoo Wings will play two games this week. Kalamazoo will start the week on Friday, January 27th at home against the Rockford IceHogs on WRKR Vegas Giveaway Night. On the season, the K-Wings are 2-1-1 against the IceHogs this year. Rockford starts the week a top of the Western Division with a record of 28-7-5. The IceHogs also start the week on a four-game winning streak.

The K-Wings will conclude the week on Saturday, January 28th, with another home game at Wings Stadium against the Fort Wayne Komets. Kalamazoo will be looking to avenge a lost last week to the Fort Wayne, who starts the week in third place in the Western Division. On the season, the K-Wings are 2-1-0 against their archrivals. Saturday will also be WKFR McDonald's Win-Win Night, if the K-Wings win everyone in attendance will receive a coupon for a FREE Value Meal from McDonald's.

All-Star Classic
The 2006 UHL All-Star Classic, which will feature five K-Wing players (Nick Bootland, Daniel Carriere, Greg Labenski, Joel Martin and Tyler Rennette), will be broadcast this Wednesday, January 25th online for FREE through the B-2 Network. Fans can click on the B-2 link at www.theuhl.com to hear both the charity game and the All-Star Classic starting at 7 p.m. The broadcasters for the game will be "The Voice of the River Otters" Dan Silver and "The Voice of the K-Wings" Mike Modugno.

Krueckl to Missouri
The K-Wings announce that they have sent forward Tim Krueckl to the Missouri River Otters to complete a previous trade with the Otters. Krueckl is the player to be named later in the deal that brought Damian Surma to Kalamazoo.


Lovin' the Road
K-Wing forwards Kory Karlander and Nick Bootland haven't had problems getting points on the road. Karlander has recorded a point in each of his last 11 of road games, while Bootland has amassed a point in each of his last 9 games. The road point streaks are the two longest streaks in the league.


Amongst Friends
The K-Wings have faired well against the Central Division. On the season, the K-Wings are 13-3-2 against their own division.


The Obscure Stat of the Week
The K-Wings have taken full advantage of their power-play opportunities. While the K-Wings rank second in the league on power-play percentage, they do rank first in power-play goals scored with 58.
