Elmira Jackals News Release
Week 14 Game Results:
1/20/05 Danbury 3 @ Elmira 2
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals lost to the Danbury Trashers for the first time this season, suffering a 3-2 defeat Friday night at the First Arena.
In the first period the tempo was set when former Jackals Brad Wingfield hit Bobby Gates hard into the boards behind the Elmira net early on, forcing Gates to leave with an injury. Soon after Craig MacDonald threw a huge hit on Danbury's Ryan Barnes causing Barnes to drop his gloves and start throwing punches at an unprepared MacDonald. Both players were sent to the locker room, Barnes with a Game Misconduct, MacDonald with blood flowing from a cut on his face. The Trashers took another penalty when defender Troy Smith was whistled for roughing when he cross-checked Kevin Cooper from behind. The Jackals were able to capitalize on their third power play of the period when Chris Chaput netted the puck at 12:23, assisted by Jarrett Konkle and Trevor Burgess. Near the end of the period Elmira's Chris Mann and Danbury's Dave MacIsaac received matching penalties for delay of game for exchanging a few words after the whistle, but that would be the last of action of the period.
At 6:19 into the second period Craig MacDonald threw a huge open-ice hit on Troy Smith causing Smith to retaliate and get Elmira another power play. The Jackals used the penalty to their advantage when Jarrett Konkle scored for his second point of the game, assisted by Chris Chaput and Trevor Burgess. The hard hitting continued throughout the period that held only one more power play given to Danbury when Jason Sessa was thrown in the penalty box for Hooking, a penalty that would carry over 32 seconds into the third period. That's how the second frame would end, with the Trashers leading in shots 19-23, but the Jackals leading in goals, 2-0.
A mere six seconds into the third period Danbury found the net when Drew Omicioli rushed in with Dave MacIssac on a 2-on-0 and scored on a helpless Nick Boucher for their first goal of the game. Just forty two seconds later, Danbury took advantage of a stunned Jackals team to tie the game. Jeff Daw put one past the Jackals goalie on a smooth play set up by David Hymovitz at 0:48 into the period. At 16:06 of the third, Alex Goupil snapped a wrist shot past Boucher to push Danbury ahead for the first time in the game. With just over a minute left in the game Elmira pulled Boucher for the extra attacker, but they failed to get a late equalizer and suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 loss.
Jayme Platt took the win in goal for Danbury, stopping 25-of-27 shots in the game, while Nick Boucher made 31 saves on 34 shots for Elmira. Elmira was 2-for-5 on the power play, while Danbury finished 1-for-3.
1/21/05 Missouri 3 @ Elmira 4
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals overcame an early 2-goal deficit to beat the Missouri River Otters 4-3 Saturday night at the First Arena.
After a heartbreaking loss Friday to the Danbury Trashers 3-2, the Jackals were back in action on Saturday against the Missouri River Otters, their first meeting since the 2002-2003 UHL season.
The River Otters jumped to an early 1-0 lead as Jimmy Callahan put the puck past Jackals goaltender Ryan McIntosh just 2:03 into the first period. Missouri added another tally onto the scoreboard when Frank Littlejohn tipped in a shot from Jeff Brown to take a two goal lead at 9:04. Trevor Burgess tallied his second goal of the season on a wrist shot from the blue line, assisted by Eddy Lowe at 16:07, cutting the River Otters' lead in half. With just under a minute left in the first period the Jackals evened the score when Konstantin Kalmikov caught a pass from Chris Chaput and fired a bullet of a wrist-shot over the shoulder of Missouri goalie Kevin Reiter. The goal was Kalmikov's fifth of the season, assisted by Chaput and Florian Iberer at 19:01.
In the second period, both goalies played extremely as they were able to only allow one goal each on a combined 27 shots faced in the period. Elmira took a 3-2 lead on a power play from Kevin Cooper, who collected his 18th goal of the season at 10:58, assists coming from Jason Sessa and Trevor Burgess. However, 32 seconds later the River Otters were back on level ground as Dave Stewart found the back of the net to tie the game at 11:30. There were a lot of power play opportunities for both teams as there was a total of seventeen minutes in penalties in the second period, but the score remained 3-3 at after forty minutes.
The Jackals were able to kill a five on three penalty kill at the beginning of the third, as Burgess and Kalmikov were both in the penalty box. The final twenty minutes were played very defensively as both goalies continued their excellent form. The period remained scoreless until Cooper picked up his second goal of the night and nineteenth of the season at 14:13, three seconds after Missouri's Martin Vasut came out of the penalty box. The goal was assisted by Craig MacDonald and Florian Iberer, giving Elmira a 4-3 lead. That would be it for the scoring as the Jackals went on for their 14th win of the season.
Both goalies played mistake free hockey as Elmira's Ryan McIntosh made 27 saves on 30 shots to pick up his ninth win of the season. Kevin Reiter stopped 27-of-31 shots in goal for the River Otters. Elmira finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while Missouri was left wanting at 0-for-6.
