Kalamazoo Wings Week In Review
October 24, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
The Kalamazoo Wings opened up their 2005-06 season against the Port Huron Flags in a building they have had recent success in, the McMorran Place Arena. After weathering a four-minute offensive ambush from the Flags to start the game, the K-Wings answered with an offensive assault of their own, which included two goals each from both Nick Bootland (1,2) and Mark Vilneff (1,2) in their 6-1 onslaught of Port Huron. Tyler Rennette led all K-Wings in scoring with four points (1 goal, 3 assists). Kalamazoo's Joel Martin was stingy between the pipes stopping 30 of the 31 shots that came his way to earn the victory. With the win, the K-Wings are now on a three-game winning streak on games played on opening nights. The victory also gives Kalamazoo a six-game winning streak at the McMorran Place Arena.
Fast Forward
The K-Wings will finish up their two-game intrastate road trip on Friday (10/28), when they visit the Motor City Mechanics. This will be the second straight season that the K-Wings have served as the Mechanics home opener. Last year, the K-Wings defeated the Mechanics 4-1 at The Garage. Kalamazoo leads the overall series against Motor City with a record of 4-2-1. The Mechanics start the week atop the Central Division with a record of 1-1-1 (3 points), just one point ahead of Kalamazoo, Muskegon and Port Huron.
On Saturday (10/29), the K-Wings will get their first chance of the regular season to skate on home ice, as they host the Fort Wayne Komets. Besides being the home opener, Saturday's contest will also be the 2nd Annual Orange Ice Game. There will be trick-or-treating for the kids inside Wings Stadium, as well as costume contest for kids and adults. Kalamazoo will be wearing special Halloween Jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game to benefit a local charity.
Right Where He Left Off
With his win last Saturday, goaltender Joel Martin is continuing his winning ways from last season. Dating back to last season, Martin is 11-1-1 in his last 13 regular season starts.
Feels Like the First Time
Mark Vilneff's two goal performance last Saturday was a first in his professional career. The two-goal effort is the first-time in Vilneff's 12-year professional career that he has had a multi-goal game.
Orange You Glad the K-Wings are Home
The K-Wings will open up the home portion of their 2005-06 schedule this Saturday, October 29th against the Fort Wayne Komets. Besides being the home opener, Saturday's contest will also coincide with the 2nd Annual Orange Ice Game. Fans are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes, as there will be a contest for both adults and children. The K-Wings will also be wearing special Mountain Dew Pitch Black Halloween Jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game. The proceeds of the jersey auction will go to benefit a local charity.
Record Breaking Performance
Forward Tyler Rennette made K-Wings history last Saturday night in Port Huron. Rennette's four-point night was the best opening night performance by a K-Wings player on opening night in their UHL history.
The Obscure Stat of the Week
With their victory over the Port Huron Flags, the K-Wings have won six straight games at the McMorran Place Arena. The winning streak includes five victories over the Port Huron Beacons, who are now the Roanoke Valley Vipers.
