Kalamazoo Wings Week In Review
March 14, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo started the week on Friday (3/11) against the Port Huron Beacons. The K-Wings started the game's scoring late in the opening period, when forward Gray Shaneberger (13) tipped in a pass from Matt Noga to put the K-Wings up 1-0. Kalamazoo received some insurance in the second period, when Daniel Carriere (8) scored on the power-play to raise the K-Wings lead to 2-0. The goal from Carriere, was his fifth power-play tally of the year; in fact 25 of Carriere's 39 points this season have come while the K-Wings had a man-advantage. The rest of the night belonged to goaltender Chad Alban, as the Kalamazoo native stopped all 21 shots he faced to record his second shutout of the season. The shutout was also Alban's 16th as a professional and 11th since joining the K-Wings. The victory gives Alban 28 this season, which places him in a tie for second place in the UHL.
The K-Wings finished up their week on Saturday (3/12) with a home game against the Motor City Mechanics. Both teams entertained the sellout crowd of 5,413 that entered Wings Stadium. The crowd of 5,413 marked the second complete sellout at Wings Stadium since the K-Wings joined the UHL during the 2000-01 season. After a scoreless opening period, the K-Wings would start the scoring with a goal from Tim Turner (21) just 1:45 into the period. Right after Turner gave Kalamazoo the lead, Motor City's Blair Manning answered back with goal of his own to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the period, Derian Hatcher (3) deked around goaltender Joel Martin and scored the go ahead goal for the Mechanics. With less than 90 seconds to play in the game and their goaltender pulled, the K-Wings answered back with a goal from Greg Labenski to tie the game at 2-2. The game headed into a shootout, where the Mechanics scored the lone goal of the six-shooter extra session to give Motor City a 3-2 shootout victory over Kalamazoo.
