Game Rewind

Friday, January 7th (Kalamazoo 3-Elmira 6)

Elmira, NY- Not starting their season-long six-game road swing the way they would have liked, the Kalamazoo Wings surrendered four power-play goals, as the Elmira Jackals defeated the K-Wings 6-3 at the First Arena.

Even through the first half of the opening period, the momentum started to lean towards Elmira after the promotional timeout, when Tyler Donati (6th) received a pass from his twin brother Justin Donati and split the K-Wings defense for a breakaway marker 13:51 in the stanza.

Through three games this season against the K-Wings, the Jackals scored only one power-play goal, while surrendering three shorthanded goals to Kalamazoo. But that would quickly change on Friday. Capitalizing on two of their four power-play chances in the first period Elmira extended their lead later in the period. Eric Regan (6th) jammed in a rebound at 17:27 of the period to push the lead to two goals. Then A.J. Perry (8th) scored on a five-on-three power-play 1:30 later to give the Jackals a 3-0 advantage after one period.

Kalamazoo committed four penalties in the final 4:36 of the first period, including three infractions which led to power-play chances for Elmira.

Elmira's power-play remained scorching hot in the second period with a tally from Kevin DeVergillio (6th) 8:23 into the period.

With less than three minutes remaining in the second period, Kalamazoo got on the scoreboard, when Aaron Clarke sent a pass to the tape of Justin Taylor, who backhanded his 10th goal of the season past Mike Brodeur. Since joining the K-Wings on December 31st, Clarke has earned points in all three games he has played.

Regan tacked on his second-goal of the night 14:48 into the third period with the Jackals fourth man-advantage goal of the night.

Kalamazoo tried to mount a comeback late in the third period, recording power-play goals from Brady Leisenring (5th) and Clarke (3rd).

DeVergilio (7th) capped off the scoring by notching his second goal on the night with an empty-netter.

Elmira finished the night 4-for-8 on the power-play, while Kalamazoo was 2-for-6.

Saturday, January 8th (Kalamazoo 5-Elmira 2)

Elmira, NY- Avenging a loss the night before, the Kalamazoo Wings used a five-goal outburst to come-from-behind and defeat the Elmira Jackals 5-2 and, in the process, earned head coach Nick Bootland is 100th career victory.

Seconds after a penalty on Justin Taylor expired in the first period; the Jackals took advantage of the unsettled situation with goal from R.J. Anderson. Anderson, who roofed his second goal of the season, has scored both his goals this year against Kalamazoo.

Elmira extended their lead later in the period, when Ryan Nie's pass to the neutral zone was intercepted by A.J. Perry. Perry's initial shot off an odd-man rush for the Jackals was stopped by Nie, but Dustin Cameron (3rd), who was playing in his first game since early December, pushed in the rebound.

In the waning moments of the opening period, Kalamazoo cut the deficit in half, when Kory Karlander found Taylor (11th) in front for a backhanded tally. Karlander's assist moved him into fourth in the league in scoring with 36 points.

Momentum from Taylor's goal carried into the second period for Kalamazoo. Celebrating his 100th career professional game, Bryan Jurynec recorded the equalizer by crashing the net and knocking in the rebound for his second goal of the season, 2:12 into the period.

Pressuring the Jackals during a breakout forced a turnover by Elmira and the K-Wings were able to pounce on the Elmira's error. Patrick Asselin centered a pass to Karlander, who's one-timer netted his team-leading 15th goal of the season to give the K-Wings the lead at 3-2.

For the second straight period, the K-Wings were able to score late, this time with a power-play goal from Trent Daavettila (11th) with 27 seconds remaining in the stanza to push the K-Wings advantage to two goals. Assisting on the goal was Aaron Clarke, who pushed his point streak to four games.

Ryan McGinnis (5th) capped off a three-point (goal and 2 assists) by ripping a slap shot from the left circle to close out the scoring.

Any hope of a Jackals comeback was erased with 4:20 remaining in the contest, when Jon Mirasty rang up 39 minutes in penalties, which in turn gave the K-Wings a power-play for the remainder of the game.

Fast Forward

Kalamazoo will conclude their season-long six-game road swing with four games this week starting with an important game on Wednesday, January 12th with a 7:30 p.m. face-off against the reigning Kelly Cup Champions, Cincinnati Cyclones. On the season, the K-Wings are 4-1-0-0 versus the Cyclones, who start the week in second place in the North Division, four points ahead of the K-Wings.

The K-Wings will then head down south for their first visit to the Bi-Lo Center on Saturday, January 15th for a 7:05 p.m. encounter against the South Division leaders, the Greenville Road Warriors. On the season, the K-Wings are 0-2-0-0 against the Road Warriors, with both games played at Wings Stadium. Kalamazoo and Greenville will also meet this Monday, January 17th for a special 1:05 p.m. face-off on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On Sunday, January 16th, the K-Wings will drive three hours down the road to North Charleston, South Carolina to battle the South Carolina Stingrays. Undefeated in regulation in their last seven games (6-0-0-1), the Stingrays enter the week tied with the Florida Everblades for second place in the South Division. Sunday's face-off for the North Charleston, Coliseum is slated for 4 p.m.

Head coach Nick Bootland reached a personal milestone on last Saturday. The K-Wings 5-2 victory over the Elmira Jackals was the 100th in Bootland's career.

Good After Two

When the K-Wings lead after the second period they usually win. On the season, Kalamazoo is 10-1-1-0 when holding a lead entering the third period.

Clarke Heating Up

Forward Andrew Clarke enters the week on a four-game point streak. Since joining the K-Wings four games ago from Stockton, Clarke has registered 6 points (3 goals, 3 assists).

The Obscure Stat of the Week

So far this season, Kalamazoo has not done well against teams from the South. The K-Wings enter the week with a record of 1-7-0-1 against South Division opponents.
