This Week's Recap and Results

Friday, Jan. 8: Reading 4 at Wheeling ‚¬" 3 (Shootout)

A shorthanded Nailers club took a 3-0 lead into the third period of play Friday, receiving a pair of goals from Joey Haddad, while Nick Petersen scored his team leading 15th of the season. However, the Royals rallied in the third posting three goals, including Ben Gordon's game tying goal with 23 seconds remaining regulation forcing the extra session. Neither team could seal the game in overtime, and all four Reading shooters in the shootout were able to score to secure the 4-3 come from behind win. Wheeling did earn an important point in the standings to hold a one point lead for first place in the North Division.

Sunday, Jan 9: Toledo ‚¬" 3 at Wheeling -- 5

For the second consecutive night, Joey Haddad opened up the game's scoring, netting his ninth goal of the season. Nearly two minutes later, Nick Petersen scored to propel the Nailers to a 2-0 lead. The Walleye's Dominic Osman scored later in the first to make the score 2-1 at the end of one.

Casey Pierro-Zabotel scored 3:13 into the second to extend Wheeling's lead 3-1, but the Walleye rallied for two goals to knot the game at three at the end of two periods. Pierro-Zabotel scored his second marker of the game on a 2-on-1 to give Wheeling a 4-3 lead. Toledo gained momentum late in the period, but Patrick Killen made all the stops down the stretch. Newcomer Kelly Miller sealed the game with an empty net goal, as Wheeling picks up the 5-3 victory. The win lifts the Nailers to three point lead in the division at the week's end.

This Week's Quick Hits

Nailers All-Star forward Ben Street was named the Reebok ECHL Player of the Month for December. Street scored 20 points (10g, 10a) and was a +9 in 10 games played in December, helping the Nailers to an 8-3-1 record for the month. Street registered a point in nine of his 10 games played, including a pair of four point games on December 10 vs. Gwinnett and December 26 vs. Cincinnati ‚¬Â¦ ‚¬Â¦..Rookie forward Nick Petersen has registered a goal in eight of the last nine games. Petersen currently holds the team lead for goals scored with 16.

This Week's Transactions

It was a busy week for the Nailers on the transaction wire. Forward Ben Street and Defenseman Jason DeSantis were recalled by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. The Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL) assigned goaltender Peter Delmas to Wheeling. The Nailers acquired defenseman Trevor Hunt from the Stockton Thunder for future considerations. Wheeling also signed defenseman Brett Dickinson, and forward Kelly Miller.

This year's show is called "Nailers Unmasked" and will allow the fans to get to know their favorite Nailers players, coaches, and staff. There will be drink and food specials, and the show is the perfect lead in for Monday Night Football!
