Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Toledo, OH- Reassigned to the Toledo Walleye prior to the contest, Thomas McCollum had representatives from the Detroit Red Wings in attendance to watch the former 1st round NHL draft pick, and McCollum didn't disappoint leading the Walleye to a 4-1 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings.
Dictating the tempo for a majority of the first period, Kalamazoo was able to breakthrough on the scoreboard late in the period. Hovering near the Walleye net, Kory Karlander earned his team-leading 13th goal of the season by pushing in a rebound at the 17:10 mark of the period. The goal extended Karlander's streak of consecutive games with a point to five.
Turnovers haunted the K-Wings in the second period, as three turnovers in their own zone were all cashed in for goals from the Walleye. Stealing the puck behind the K-Wings net, Andy Bohmbach, found Evan Rankin in the slot. Rankin's one-timer was deflected by Dominic Osman for his second goal of the season 3:07 into the period to tie the game at 1-1.
Rankin wouldn't be done recording points in the second, as the Portage, Michigan native rung up two goals in the period, including the eventual game-winner. With the puck loose in the left corner, Bohmbach found Rankin (10th) in front for the go-ahead tally.
Toledo extended their lead to 3-1 midway through the period, when Rankin (11th) scored on a wrister. In six games against Kalamazoo, Rankin has recorded 12 points (8 goals, 4 assists).
Another turnover in the K-Wings zone led to a goal for the Walleye early in the third period. Scooter Smith put the game out of reach by notching his second of the season by redirecting a Ryan Stokes slap shot.
McCollum (1-0-0-0) stopped 40 shots in his Walleye debut, while Ryan Nie (9-8-1-2) made 31 saves in defeat.
Held without a point in the contest, Trent Daavettila's scoring streak was snapped at 12-games. The 12-game streak is a K-Wings season-high and ties the ECHL season-high.
