K-Wings Start Training Camp
September 30, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings of the United Hockey League announce the start of their 2002-2003 training camp. Training camp will run 7 days and will include two preseason games against longtime rival the Fort Wayne Komets.
First of the games will be this Friday, October 4th, at Wings Stadium. All tickets for the game are $5 reserve seats. The second game will be the following night, as the K-Wings will travel to Fort Wayne.
K-Wings will start training camp with 24 players; however, Kalamazoo will lose the services of those six players because they will be attending training camps of AHL teams.
Forward Richard Keyes will be attending the camp of the Hershey Bears, which is an affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche. Forwards Craig Bilick, Mike Ford, Glendon Cominetti, and defensemen Kirill Alexeev, and Herman Hultgren will be joining the training camp of the Cleveland Barons, who is the top affiliate of the San Jose Sharks. Minus the six players, the K-Wings will have 18 players (16 skaters, and 2 goaltenders) for a majority of their training camp.
The K-Wings shortened their training camp roster even more over the weekend, as they traded goaltender Kory Cooper for future considerations. Cooper, who played last season in the Central Hockey League with the Fort Worth Brahmas signed with the K-Wings in June. Last week, the K-Wings goaltending situation got crowded as Kalamazoo signed AHL standout Chad Alban. Alban will compete with Brian Rogers, who attended Michigan Tech last season for the K-Wings starting goaltender.
Besides the players the K-Wings have signed to training camp, they have also invited three other players. Kalamazoo added defensemen Steve Howard and Matt Kruzich. Howard played last season in Central Hockey League with the San Angelo Outlaws. Kruzich is from Mattiwan, Michigan, and last played hockey in the late 90's with Michigan State University. The K-Wings also invited forward Andy Disch. Andy played last season in the Central Hockey League with the Lubbock Cotton Kings, the Corpus Christi IceRays and the Wichita Thunder.
The K-Wings will run two a day practices that will include skating in Wings Stadium at both 10 am and 4 pm Monday-Thursday. Kalamazoo will have a morning skate on Friday in preparation of their game with Fort Wayne.
Game time Friday night will be at 7:30 pm, and all tickets for the game will be $5 reserve seating.
Season Tickets for the upcoming 2002-2003 season of K-Wings hockey are currently on sale by calling the Kalamazoo Wings at (269) 345-5101.
