Komets Open Training Camp

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets opened camp today with a press luncheon at the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne. Head coach Greg Puhalski and player/assistant coach Troy Neumeier start camp with a roster of 26 players. The club has 2 weeks to prepare for Fort Wayne's 4th season in the United Hockey League which gets underway Friday, Oct. 11 at Rockford against the IceHogs. It will be the first of 10 road games before the Komets open their season at home.

The team has set up camp at the McMillen Ice Arena where the Komets will call home until they move into the newly renovated Memorial Coliseum only a few days before their first home game of the season Nov. 9. Practices will be held daily at McMillen for the next 6 weeks (see Komets game and practice schedule for exact times and dates).

The Komets will tangle with the Kalamazoo Wings in a home-and-home exhibition series this weekend. The Komets will play at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo Friday night, Oct. 4 at 7:35. The 2 teams head back to Fort Wayne to face each other in a final tune-up Saturday night, Oct. 5 at McMillen Ice Arena at 7:05. Tickets for the Komets pre-season home game against the Kalamazoo Wings are on sale at the Komet office, 1010 Memorial Way, and at Komet Kuarters in Northcrest Shopping Center.

Komet regular season home games will be played at the Memorial Coliseum and start at 7:35pm Monday through Saturday. Sunday games will faceoff at 5:05pm. The 2002-03 UHL season is a 76-game schedule with 38 games each at home and on the road. The Komets have moved to the Eastern Conference this year with Adirondack, Elmira, Flint and Port Huron. The Western Conference includes Kalamazoo, Missouri, Muskegon, Quad City and Rockford. The 2 conferences make up the 10-team UHL.

Komets hit camp ice this afternoon.....the Komets are scheduled to take the ice this afternoon at 2:30 at McMillen Ice Arena for the first official practice of training camp. Returnees are Troy Neumeier, Kelly Miller, Ryan Severson, Michel Massie, Dusting Virag, Kevin Schmidt, Kevin Bertram and Marc Barlow. Returning to the Komets after a 3-year stint in Germany is veteran goaltender Pokey Reddick who will be starting his 19th pro year and 6th season in Fort Wayne.

Komet game broadcasts and webcasts....most Komet games will be broadcast on either WOWO Radio AM 1190 or WONO Radio AM 1380 with Bob Chase calling the play-by-play in his 50th season behind the Fort Wayne microphone. Also, all games broadcast will be carried on the internet at the Komets home on the web, www.komets.com, via Comcast KometCast. In addition to live game radio, Komet stats, news and information will continue to be updated daily on the web at www.komets.com.
