Louisiana IceGators News Release

Lafayette, LA – The Louisiana IceGators went through day two of preparations for the 2002-03 ECHL season Monday morning, working out on the Cajundome ice for close to two hours.

Three players participated in their first workout Monday, while three others left for Houston. John DePourcq, Semir Ben-Amor and Darren Martens each skated for the first time during the camp. Bruce Richardson, Dennis Shiryaev and Kevin Mitchell are all in camp with AHL Houston.

"We added some more bodies today and started teaching some systems," said IceGators head coach and vice president of hockey operations Dave Farrish.

Farrish was impressed with how quickly his team is catching on. "We've got a very intelligent group of guys here," said Farrish. "They are catching on very quickly."

Farrish said he was also pleased with the continued effort being put forth by his team. "They're very quick and have good tempo," he said. "It's very upbeat."

One reason for the spark is undoubtedly the return of John DePourcq to the ice. DePourcq, an assistant coach with the team for the past two seasons, is coming out of retirement for the third time to play for the IceGators this season. "It's fun, it's nice to get out there with a second day under your belt, and it was my first day," said DePourcq, who is in his first practice as a player in 2 ½ years. "Everyone's getting to know each other. A lot of people are anxious and nervous some of the young guys are quiet."

"The start of camp is always a good time, trying to get your legs underneath you," added DePourcq. "You're also getting to know each other's tendencies."

The IceGators will head to the HockeyPlex in Carencro for Tuesday's 10 a.m. practice. The team will then have two more practices to prepare for its first exhibition game Friday at 2 p.m. in Baton Rouge.
