K-Wings reel in Walleye and move into first place in the North

Kalamazoo, MI - Finding their groove at the right time of the season, the Kalamazoo Wings defeated the Toledo Walleye 5-4 Saturday night at Wings Stadium during Van Andel Institute Purple Community Night, presented by Lake Michigan Credit Union.

The Walleye took the lead 5:45 into the first period, when David Gilbert (11th) netted a power-play tally.

Later in the first, Toledo struck again on a cluster in front of the net. After being knocked down to the ice, Kevin Lynch (7th) continued battling in front of the crease and still on one knee he was able to score on a third rebound opportunity.

Former Walleye, Joe Sova (3rd) brought the K-Wings back to within a single goal with a blue line wrister 15:36 into the stanza.

Ignited by a couple of new members, the K-Wings took control of the game in the second period. Wesley Myron was able to wrap around the Walleye net, finding Mitchell Good (1st) in front of the goal, for the equalizing mark.

A little more than five minutes later, Kalamazoo and Nick Sirota (5th) continued their unanswered goal streak. Finishing an odd-man rush, Matt Caria found Sirota with a back-door pass on a power-play advantage pushing the K-Wings lead 3-2.

The K-Wings dominance in the second period went on moments later as Justin Taylor (9th) gave himself his own birthday present. Celebrating his 25th birthday, Taylor jammed in a loose puck for the K-Wings second man-advantage goal of the period.

Toledo stopped Kalamazoo's run with nearly four minutes left of the second. Maxim Shalunov (10th) through traffic shot the puck from the right circle to capitalize on a Walleye power-play.

Kalamazoo's scoring frenzy stayed alive in the final period as Myron found Brandon Martell (3rd) at the blue line for a slap-shot strike. Myron's play earned him two assists in his first performance in his K-Wing season debut.

Gilbert (12th) helped keep the team in the game. Earning his second goal of the evening, the forward found the back of the net 9:10 into the third to close out the scoring.

The victory increases the K-Wings home winning streak to season-high five games and in the process extends their overall unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-0-1).

Kalamazoo's win coupled with a Fort Wayne Komets victory at Cincinnati over the Cyclones puts the K-Wings in sole possession of the North Division.

Kalamazoo will finish the week on the road tomorrow, Sunday, February 9th with a 5:05 p.m. encounter against the Fort Wayne Komets.

The K-Wings will begin a brief two-game home stand this Friday, February 14th with a 7:30 p.m. face-off versus the Toledo Walleye during the 14th annual Pink Ice Valentine's Day Game.

Tickets for all K-Wings home games are currently on sale at the Wings Stadium Ticket Office, all Ticketmaster locations, including www.ticketmaster.com or by calling (800) 745-3000. Ticket office hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays.

Individual ticket prices for home games are $13 and $17.50 for adults and only $7 for kids ages 12 and under. The price for all K-Wings premium night games (all colored ice games and the New Year's Eve game) are just $1 more. Fans can save money by purchasing K-Wings single-game tickets in advance. Tickets purchased on the day of a game increase by $2 (adults only).

Fans that plan on attending multiple games can avoid service fees plus enjoy a discount from the single-game price by purchasing a 12, 24 or 36-game flexi-plan.
