Daytona Tortugas News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - Thanks to three runs scored in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Jupiter Hammerheads knocked off the Daytona Tortugas, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Scoreless through three, Daytona (19-21, 54-51) squirted ahead in the top of the fourth. With one out, 3B Bryant Flete (1-2, R, 2B, 2 BB, SO) lofted a fly ball to right that got lost in the twilight sky. The ball landed behind the right fielder, enabling the 26-year-old to roll into second with a double. Following a ground out, 1B Bruce Yari (1-4, RBI, SO) yanked a base-hit into right. Flete scored from second on the single to put the Tortugas in front, 1-0.
It stayed that way until Jupiter (19-22, 40-64) got on the board themselves in the sixth. Consecutive one-out singles from 3B James Nelson (1-3, R, BB) and LF Jhonny Santos (1-2, R, 2 BB) began the rally. On a 2-2 pitch, 2B Micah Brown (1-3, R, 2B, RBI, BB, SO) ripped a double into the gap in left-center. Nelson scored from second on the two-base hit to tie the contest up at one.
A ground out would mark the second retired batter of the inning, but Daytona could not emerge with the game still tied. On the second offering he saw, RF JJ Bleday (1-4, 2 RBI, BB) rolled a base-hit into center. Both runners came across on the 2019 first-round pick's single, putting the Hammerheads in the lead, 3-1.
That was all the scoring that would be done, as Jupiter's bullpen shut the door. LHP Alex Vesia (2.0 IP, BB, 2 SO) hurled a scoreless sixth and seventh, earning his fourth victory of the season. After RHP C.J. Carter (1.0 IP, H) tossed a spotless eighth, RHP Cason Sherrod (1.0 IP, BB, 2 SO) worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to garner his second save.
Despite picking up a quality start, RHP Jared Solomon (6.0 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, SO) was on the wrong end of the box score on Tuesday. The 22-year-old surrendered three runs over six innings and was saddled with his fifth loss in the Florida State League.
RHP Nick Neidert (5.0 IP, 6 H, R, ER, BB, 3 SO) took a no-decision after issuing a run on six hits in five innings for Jupiter.
Daytona will look to force a rubber match on Wednesday, as RHP Ryan Lillie (2-4, 3.03 ERA) is scheduled to make his first start since returning from Double-A Chattanooga. RHP Jordan Holloway (2-9, 5.86 ERA) - Miami's No. 16 prospect per Baseball America - is expected to get the ball for Jupiter.
The Tortugas Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 6:15 p.m. ET, leading up to the 6:30 p.m. ET start at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Wednesday evening's contest can be heard on www.daytonatortugas.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.
Following the lengthy road trip, the Tortugas will return to The Jack to open up a three-contest set against the St. Lucie Mets, the High-A affiliate of the New York Mets, on Friday, August 2. Daytona continues its Best Dressed Friday series, as players and coaches will don special uniforms in honor of the 25th anniversary of comedy classic, "Dumb and Dumber". Those jerseys will be auctioned off online throughout the weekend. It will be another Friday Night Happy Hour presented by Kona Brewing with buy-one, get-one Kona beer products and Bud Light from 5:30 p.m. until first pitch. Finally, after the game, fans will be treated to another splendid Postgame Fireworks display.
Multi-game plans and single-game tickets are still currently available and can be purchased online at www.daytonatortugas.com, or by calling the Tortugas' Ticket Office at (386) 257-3172.
