Clearwater Threshers News Release
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers struggled to find the offense in the series opener against the Florida Fire Frogs, dropping the Tuesday night contest, 2-0, at Osceola County Stadium. The Philadelphia Phillies affiliate was whitewashed for the seventh time in July, and the third time against the Atlanta Braves affiliate this month.
The lone damage of the night came in the eighth inning against Keylan Killgore (1-3). The southpaw walked Riley Delgado and CJ Alexander to start the frame, and saw his first pitch to Jefrey Ramos sail over the head of Simon Muzziotti in center for an RBI double.
The lefty punched out Drew Lugbauer for the first out, but had Kevin Josephina lift a sacrifice fly to left to put Clearwater (55-52, 19-22) in a 2-0 hole.
The visitors had a chance to knot things up in the final frame after a two-out walk from Matt Hartman (1-5) put Nick Maton at first base, but Madison Stokes flew out to center to wrap up the game.
The Thresher had a chance to grab an early lead with a runner at second and nobody out in the third against Philip Pfeifer.
Simon Muzziotti singled on the first pitch of the inning and stole second during Matt Vierling's plate appearance. However, Vierling, Dalton Guthrie and Rafael Marchan would all go down on strikes to leave the runner stranded.
Clearwater's scoreless-inning drought against Florida (40-66, 15-25) reached 25.1 innings with the shutout defeat on Tuesday. The last man to cross the dish against the Fire Frogs was Guthrie after a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning in the front end of a doubleheader on July 13.
Jerad Eickhoff started for the Threshers and tossed the first two innings in his rehab assignment. The 29-year-old allowed two hits and struck out a pair on 26 pitches.
Jack Perkins made his Advanced-A debut on the mound in the series opener. The right-hander worked four hitless frames while walking two and setting down four Florida on strikes.
Clearwater looks to get back into the win column in game two of the three-game series at Osceola County Stadium on Wednesday night. RHP Kyle Glogoski (1-1, 2.12) toes the slab for the Threshers against the Fire Frogs' RHP Tristan Beck (2-2, 5.65). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. starting with Threshers Live! The Pregame Show on threshersbaseball.com.
