St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets busted out the bats and crushed the Palm Beach Cardinals 9-3 on Tuesday at First Data Field.
The Mets pounded out 14 hits and scored runs in each of their first four innings. Dan Rizzie went a perfect 4 for 4 with three singles, a double, two RBI and a run scored. He drew a walk in his final plate appearance to reach base for a fifth time.
Wagner Lagrange went 3 for 4 with three runs scored, one RBI and he made it on base four times.
Four Mets pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts, their second highest total of the season. The most strikeouts they have in a game came last Monday against Palm Beach when they struck out 15 Cardinals.
Mets starter Joe Cavallaro brushed off back-to-back home runs by Ivan Herrera and Scott Hurst in the second inning. He recorded eight punch outs and walked just one over five innings. He scattered six hits and two runs to earn his second victory over the Cardinals in the last week.
Marcel Renteria fanned two batters in two hitless innings. Briam Campusano recorded two outs in the eighth, including one via strikeout.
Andrew Mitchell retired all four batters he faced to finish out the game. He struck out the side in the ninth.
The Mets tied the game 2-2 in the second inning on Cody Bohanek's RBI single.
The Mets scored twice in the third inning to take the lead for good. Carlos Cortes scored from third on a double steal to make it 3-2 and Rizzie followed with a run-scoring double.
The Mets sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs in the fourth inning to break the game open. Cortes, Lagrange and Rizzie hit RBI singles in the frame. Edgardo Fermin capped the inning with a RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home Lagrange.
Most of the damage was down off of Cardinals starter Edgar Gonzalez. He was charged with eight runs (seven earned) over 3.1 innings. He walked five and gave up nine hits.
All nine Mets reached base at least once. Jacob Zanon and Cortes joined Rizzie and Lagrange with multi-hit games.
The Mets (26-15, 58-49) and Cardinals (13-27, 48-56) play the middle game of their series on Wednesday. First pitch at First Data Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
