Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums got off to a hot start, but the Joliet Slammers scored in the seventh to tie the game before going on to 5-3 win in 10 innings.

Things couldn't have started much better for Traverse City in the first inning as Brian Heere singled followed by a walk to Ryan Still. Jose Vargas hit a fly ball to rightfield that was deep enough to advance the runners a base each. Chase Burch was subsequently hit by a pitch to load the bases for Jeff Flagg who waited back on an 0-2 curve ball, lining it into centerfield to score Heere and Still for a 2-0 Beach Bums lead. Kyle Colligan stood in next and lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Burch, increasing the lead to 3-0.

The game would remain that way until the fifth when Joliet saw Josh Lyon and Patrick Norris walk before Abel Nieves doubled, plating both of the baserunners to slice the Traverse City lead to 3-2. That score would hole into the seventh when David Fox led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Norris. Two batters later, Nieves came through with his second double of the night to score Fox, knotting the game at 3-3.

With the score still 3-3 in the tenth, the Slammers had runners on second and third and two out for Kyle Maunus who singled into rightfield, scoring Nieves and David Christiansen who had both singled to give Joliet the eventual winning runs.

John Barsotti (1-0) picked up the win with Amalio Diaz earning his 14th save of the season. Scott Mueller (1-3) took the loss for the Beach Bums.

The rubber game of the series comes up on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. with a Two-for-Tuesday as fans receive two-for-one pricing on all chairback seats. That's two chairback seats for just $12! David Deminsky (5-1, 5.89) will get the start for Traverse City against Steven Maxwell (5-6, 3.79) for Joliet.
