Grizzlies Record 11-Run 7th; Win 7th in a Row

July 23, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release

SAUGET, Ill. - Trailing 6-1 in the seven inning, the Gateway Grizzlies had the best inning in franchise history, scoring 11 runs in the seventh to come back for a 12-6 win Monday night at GCS Ballpark. The win was the Grizzlies seventh in a row and it gave them their fifth straight series win.

Rockford (26-32) appeared to be destined for a win after scoring four runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh to push their lead to five.

Gateway (34-25) had other plans. The Grizzlies scored 11 runs on seven hits, five walks, a wild pitch and two hit batsmen in the seventh. Seven different players recorded RBI in the inning. Jonathan Johnson had an RBI walk, Antone DeJesus an RBI single, Jerod Yakubik an RBI single and an RBI walk, Rogelio Norris a two-run double and an RBI groundout, Chris McClendon an RBI single, Vladimir Frias an RBI single and Justin Dunning an RBI single. The Grizzlies sent 17 batters to the plate in the seventh.

The 11 runs in one inning was one short of tying a Frontier League record. Springfield (1997) and London (1999) have both scored 12 runs in one inning.

Gateway only scored one run outside of the seventh. Yakubik drove in a run with a single in the fifth inning.

Yakubik went 4-for-4 with RBI to pace Gateway while DeJesus went 3-for-4 with two runs.

Max Whieldon got the start for the Grizzlies and gave up five runs in six innings.

Logan Mahon (2-1) got the win for Gateway after throwing an inning and giving up a run.

Gateway and Rockford return to action on Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark. Right-hander Paul Tremlin (4-0) makes the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05.
