Rockford RiverHawks News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies rallied in one of the biggest innings in Frontier League history and beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 12-6, on Monday at GCS Ballpark.
Gateway sent 17 batters to the plate in the seventh inning and scored 11 times, one run short of the league record. Thirteen straight Grizzlies reached base safely against four Rockford relief pitchers with one out in the inning.
Gateway leadoff man Jonathon Johnson hadn't reached base until the seventh, but stretched his league-record on-base streak to 58 games with a single and a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.
Two Rockford pitchers - Andrew Armstrong and Jordan Goldschmidt - each faced four without an out recorded. Goldschmidt came on to face Vladimir Frias, who singled in the tying run. Chris McClendon scored the go-ahead run on a Goldschmidt wild pitch. Armstrong (2-1) took the loss.
Rockford took a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Jet Butler broke a scoreless tie with a leadoff home run in the fifth inning. Evan Button sparked a four-run sixth inning with a two-out solo homer that gave the RiverHawks their second lead. Ted Obregon singled in a seventh-inning run off reliever Logan Mahon (2-1), who wound up with the win.
The 11-run bottom of the seventh was the largest inning ever scored off Rockford pitching. Two Frontier League teams have scored 12 runs in an inning - the Springfield Capitals in 1997 and the London Werewolves in 1999.
Gateway has won a season-high seven straight games, including the first two games of the series. The series finale is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
The RiverHawks are home for a 6:05 p.m. doubleheader against Normal on Wednesday. Lou Bachrodt Chevrolet sponsors a youth clinic at 5 p.m. It's also Dog Days of Summer, when four-legged fans are welcome in the park.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league in its 20th season. Games are broadcast on WNTA-FM (100.5) Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
