Last time out...
The Traverse City Beach Bums (38-20) scored four runs in the third inning to take the lead for good as the Joliet Slammers (24-34) lost Sunday night by a final score of 10-6. With the game tied at one, the Beach Bums got to Michal Perconte (0-4) for four runs in the third. Perconte walked three batters to load the bases. With two away Jeff Flagg singled in a run and a Perconte wild pitch made it 3-1 Beach Bums. Then Kyle Colligan doubled in two more runs to extend the Traverse City lead to 5-1. Joliet made the game close with three runs in the seventh inning. David Christensen doubled to start the frame. Matt Mirabal singled in Christensen and Patrick Norris tripled in two more runs to make the score 7-5.Traverse City answered in the bottom of the eighth by scoring three runs. Joliet scored one in the ninth on a RBI grounder from David Fox but it wasn't enough as the Beach Bums prevailed.
For Starters...
Jim Schult has won three straight starts on the road but is coming off a home loss at the hands of the Gateway Grizzlies on July 18. In that outing he went six innings, giving up five runs (four earned), walking three and striking out four. Schult started the season in the bullpen for Joliet and faced Traverse City on May 22 in that role, giving up one run on three hits in 3.1 innings. Schult's 56 strike outs this season is tied with Steven Maxwell for the most on the team and a tie for ninth in the Frontier League. The Eastern Connecticut State alum spent 2011 in the Canadian-American Association with the NYSL Federals. The traveling team struggled but Schult finished the season with 10 starts and his ERA was the best on the team among pitchers with 10 or more starts that season. At ECSU Schult was named the Co-Division III National Player of the Year in 2011.
Strong background...
The signing of David Christensen yesterday gives the Slammers their highest former draft pick ever. Christensen was a 2nd round pick of the Colorado Rockies in 2006. Formerly the Slammers' highest former draft pick was ex-MLB pitcher Billy Petrick, who was a 3rd round selection of the Cubs.
Fifth and Sixth inning woes...
The Slammers have been out-scored by a combined 36 runs in the fifth and sixth innings this season. They have given up the most runs in the fifth inning (50) and have been out-scored by the most (20 runs) in the sixth inning.
Struggling...
The Slammers are 10 games under .500 for the first time in franchise history.
Against Traverse City...
The Slammers are 1-6 against Traverse City this season. They went 5-7 against the Beach Bums in 2011.
Falling behind early...
The opponent has scored first against the Slammers 38 times this season. Joliet is 12-26 when that happens. The Slammers are 12-8 when they score first.
Netzel doing work...
Shortstop Brad Netzel has started to really pick up the pace at the plate this season. He has five multi-hit games over the past eight contests with six RBI during that time frame.
Error indicator...
The Slammers are 7-27 in games when they make an error. They are 17-7 in games when they do not.
Out-hit...
When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 17-9, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 4-23.
Transaction Wire...
