
Gilblair Strikes out Ten in Win

Normal, IL - Southern Illinois Miners starter Shawn Gilblair (7-3) struck out ten batters in earning a team high seven wins as the Miners defeated the Normal CornBelters 5-2 at the Corn Crib. The Miners improve to 35-24 on the season. Gilblair allowed two runs over eight innings. He gave up nine hits and didn't walk a batter.
Normal jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as former Miners first baseman Ernie Banks hit a one out two run double to bring in Norberto Susini and Steven Felix. The Miners came right back in the top of the second inning off CornBelters starter Jacob Liedka as Jason Ganek hit a one out single to score Ken Gregory after Alvaro Ramirez moved Gregory and Ryan Eigsti over to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. With the score 2-1, Will Block hit a sacrifice fly to score Eigsti to even the game at 2-2.
The Miners continued their offense against Liedka in the top of the fourth inning as Ryan Eigsti hit a solo home run to give the Miners a 3-2 lead. After a double by Alvaro Ramirez and a single by Jason Ganek, Will Block hit another sacrifice fly to give the Miners a 4-2 lead. The Miners added one more run off Liedka in the top of the sixth inning as Will Block hit a two out double and RBI to bring in Alvaro Ramirez to give the Miners a 5-2 lead.
Albert Ayala came in the bottom of the ninth in search of his seventh save. Ayala gave up two hits but got pinch hitter Jason Thompson to fly out to left field to close out the game for the Miners. The Miners would go on to win the game 5-2. Ayala earned his seventh save of the season.
The Miners and CornBelters wrap up a three game set tomorrow night at the Corn Crib. Cody Hall (4-0) takes the mound for the Miners in search of his fifth win. First pitch is at 6:30 pm. The Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show with Mike Ventola will get underway at 6:10 pm.
