Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Holiday season has arrived and the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings will be certainly busy over the course of the next week, doing their part in helping to make this season a little brighter for those less fortunate throughout western Manitoba.

The Wheat Kings, who close out a stretch of three straight road games with a stop in Saskatoon on Wednesday, return to Westman Communications Group Place this weekend with back to back games on Friday and Saturday nights against the visiting Kelowna Rockets and Edmonton Oil Kings respectively.

Friday's game will feature the annual Shoppers Mall Teddy Bear Toss. Western Manitoba hockey fans are encouraged to bring a new, stuffed animal to the game against the Rockets and when the Wheat Kings score their first goal, litter the ice with them. All stuffed animals collected will then be donated to the local Christmas Cheer Board.

"Shoppers Mall is pleased to again sponsor the Teddy Bear Toss for Christmas Cheer this season," says Mall marketing director Kim Lewarne. "The holidays are a special time of year and Shoppers Mall hopes to provide extra joy for all this holiday season. It's our wish that everyone in western Manitoba will have a 'Beary' Merry Christmas."

All fans bringing a stuffed animal for Christmas Cheer on Friday night will also have a chance to win a $250 Bulova watch from McCallum Jewellers.

Fans attending Saturday night's game vs. Edmonton meanwhile are encouraged to donate a new unwrapped toy or non-perishable food item for the Westman & Area Christmas Dinner.

This year marks the 24th year for the Westman & Area Traditional Christmas Dinner. The first one, which was organized by former Wheat King head coach Rocky Addison, was attended by thirty people and was held in a small church at the corner of 8th Street and Victoria Avenue. Its been held at the Keystone Centre for the past ten years. Last Christmas, over 2,000 meals were delivered throughout the city and close to 2,400 meals were served to those who attended the 2-day event at the Keystone.

Tickets to Brandon's two home games this weekend are on sale now at the Keystone box office. Fans can also order by phone at 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca

On the ice, the Wheat Kings will be hoping to edge closer to the front running Blades on Wednesday night. Thanks to seven wins over the course of their last eight games, Brandon has moved to within three points of first place Saskatoon. Brandon enters the week with a record of 20-11-0-2 and has won two of three games against the Blades this season.
