Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Johnstown, PA - The Chiefs would strike first but fall to Dayton in the shootout by a score of 3-2 on Saturday night.

Johnstown would open the scoring, finding the net at 11:40 of the first. Justin Coutu took a shot from the point, and Ray Macias hammered it past Dayton goaltender Rejean Beauchemin. The Chiefs' power play failed to materialize and was abbreviated when Rob Drummond was called for a hook at 17:09. Johnstown out-shot the Bombers 11-7 and carried a 1-0 lead after one.

The Chiefs would barrage the Dayton goal with 20 shots in the second, but neither team would find the net. Drummond broke for the Bombers' zone and fired, his shot coming off Beauchemin's pads. Joey Olson followed up with a shot of his own and was denied. When Mike Sgroi received a double minor for slashing and roughing, the Chiefs penalty kill battled to prevent Dayton from scoring. Randy Rowe and Drummond started an odd man rush as they crossed the blue line 2-on-1 late in the period, but Rowe's shot was turned aside. The Chiefs held their one-goal advantage after 40 minutes of play.

Matt Beaudoin would strike twice in the third to bring the game to a 2-2 standstill. He put Dayton on the board at 5:43 with a goal assisted by Scott Kelman. That evened the score at 1-1. With the Chiefs on the power play, Beaudoin would notch a short-handed goal on a pass from Mike Berry to give the Bombers a 2-1 lead. Johnstown would even the score less than a minute later, as Tyler Hirsch potted a shot from Rowe and Drummond at 11:39.

Neither team would score through the remainder of regulation. Johnstown was given two power plays in overtime but failed to score against the brick wall that was Beauchemin.

The Chiefs were unable to find a point in the shootout, while the Bombers tallied two. Masahito Nishiwaki netted the game winner in the fourth round of the shootout, and Brad Bonello added an insurance marker to give Dayton the win.

Ryan Nie took the loss in net for Johnstown, stopping 23 of 25 shots. The Chiefs fired 47 shots at Beauchemin and went 1-for-6 on the power play.
