Columbia Inferno News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Feb. 16, 2008)-The Columbia Inferno (22-19-4-6, 54 points) beat the visiting Pensacola Ice Pilots (12-33-3-3, 30 points) 3-2 for their second win over the club in three games and fourth consecutive victory overall.
The Inferno took a 1-0 lead midway through the first when Jeff Miles cycled behind Pensacola's net and passed to Dan Glover, who hammered the puck past Cam Ellsworth's glove side.
The score would remain 1-0 through much of the first two periods until Steve McJannet scored his eighth of the year 1:39 into the third period. McJannet camped out next to the net and tipped the puck past Ellsworth after Faulkner sent a heavy shot-pass from the far point. Inferno defenseman Todd Perry pushed the Inferno lead to 3-0 at 3:46 of the third when he blistered a shot top-shelf over Ellsworth's glove from the mid-slot.
It looked as if the Inferno would ride out the lead to a 3-0 shutout, but the Ice Pilots got on the board at 7:34 of the third. Bryan Esner took advantage of a shorthanded breakaway and beat goaltender Jeff Jakaitis' five-hole. The Ice Pilots continued to push through the rest of the game, and Esner trimmed the Inferno lead to 3-2 when he backhanded a fluke rebound off the boards past a surprised Jakaitis.
The Inferno survived a late-game surge from the Ice Pilots to preserve the lead and win 3-2.
Jakaitis finished with 39 saves on 41 shots, while Ellsworth stopped 22 of 25.
The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum on Wednesday, Feb. 20 to host the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:05 p.m.
