JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -Thanks to a JJ Bleday solo home run late in the game, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp snuck away with a 3-2 win over the Gwinnett Stripers Saturday night at 121 Financial Ballpark.
In the midst of a pitcher's duel, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (31-28) took a hard-fought lead in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Brian Miller singled and immediately stole second. Two batters later, Bryson Brigman tripled, scoring Miller to break the tie and put Jacksonville ahead 2-1.
The Jumbo Shrimp added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth and took the largest lead of the day. With two outs, Bleday (11) launched a solo home run to give Jacksonville a 3-1 lead.
The Gwinnett Stripers (29-30) cut their deficit to one in the top of the eighth inning. Ryan Casteel doubled and went to third on a flyout from Ryan Goins. In the following at-bat, Drew Waters hit a sac fly, scoring Casteel to make the score 3-2.
Bryan Hoeing (W, 5-2) pitched 6.2 strong innings, yielding one run on four hits with four strikeouts. Andrew Nardi struck out the only batter he faced, and George Soriano (S, 2) allowed one run on one hit with one walk and tallied two strikeouts en route to a two-inning save.
The Stripers got on the board early, with a run in the top of the first inning. Waters started things off with a triple and then scored on a sac fly by Braden Shewmake to give Gwinnett an early 1-0 lead.
