Iowa Cubs News Release

TOLEDO, OH - The Iowa Cubs (26-32) tied a season high with 17 hits to beat the Toledo Mud Hens (29-28) by a score of 8-0, Saturday at Fifth Third Field.

After scoring four runs in the first three innings last night, Iowa jumped out to an early lead again tonight, this time scoring five runs in the first inning. Dixon Machado set the tone immediately, hitting a solo home run to start the game. The solo blast was Machado's first of the year and extended his hitting streak to a season-long 11 games.

RBI singles from Nelson Velazquez and John Hicks made it a 3-0 game before a two-run blast from Narciso Crook extended their early lead to five. With the five-run lead, Adrian Sampson went to work for the I-Cubs, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings in his first start in over a month. The righty allowed just three hits while striking out three along the way.

He was relieved by Brandon Leibrandt, who also kept the Mud Hens off the board. He surrendered three hits and two walks while striking out one over 3.1 scoreless innings. Iowa added to their lead in the eighth inning, scoring three more runs.

Levi Jordan and Nelson Maldonado each had RBI doubles while Machado used an RBI groundout to grow Iowa's lead to 8-0. Ben Leeper and Conner Menez each spun scoreless innings to close out the game and earn Iowa their first victory of the series.

POSTGAME NOTES:

- In his first start since May 1, Adrian Sampson threw 3.2 scoreless innings for Iowa. He struck out five batters and his other six outs were all via the fly out. He didn't induce a single groundout in his outing.
