Jackals Win Fifth Straight 5-3 Over Dayton

March 20, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, NY - Pierre-Luc Faubert and Chris Busby scored twice while Benoit Doucet posted his second four-point game in the last week to pace the Elmira Jackals to a 5-3 win over the Dayton Bombers Wednesday night in front of 2,766 fans at First Arena.

The win, Elmira's fourth straight and sixth in their last seven games, bumped the Jackals' lead over third place Reading to five points with nine games left. The Royals visit Elmira Friday night in the club's last regular season meeting of the year.

After a 1-1 opening period, the middle frame proved to be the turning point in this North Division battle.

Faubert's 26th goal of the year gave the Jackals their first lead of the night which they would not relinquish the rest of the way. With a delayed penalty coming, Chaz Johnson (two assists) rang a shot off the post. Faubert followed the puck into the crease and poked the rebound in at 8:38 for a 2-1 lead.

Busby potted his second of the game, an ECHL first for the third-year pro, from the high slot to make it 3-1 at 10:58 on a feed from Maxime Boisclair out of the right circle.

Ryan Smyth pulled the visitors to within 3-2 with 6:47 left in the second, but a Doucet breakaway goal, his team-high 28th of the year, regained the two-goal and made it 4-2 Elmira at the end of forty minutes.

Dayton trimmed the lead to a single goal once more as the ECHL's leading goal scorer, Matt Beaudoin, snapped in his 37th of the year from the deep slot at 10:58 of the final period to close the gap down to 4-3.

Attempting to get goaltender Rejean Beauchemin (25 saves) off for an extra attacker with under ninety seconds left was futile as the Jackals bottled up the Bombers behind their own end. Johnson and Greg Labenski were tangled up on the back side of the Dayton net with puck in their skates as Faubert pulled the puck lose, cut to the front and deposited his 27th of the season for 5-3 lead and just 1:02 left in the contest.

Doucet assisted on Faubert's insurane tally as his three helpers matched a season high accomplished twice previously. With his four-point game, Doucet's 72 points lifted him three spots into fourth in the league scoring race. He is the ECHL's third-leading rookie point producer this season

Ervins Mustukovs picked up his fifth straight win in net for Elmira, stopping 24 of 27 shots, to improve his record to 6-1-1 in ten appearances.

The Jackals reach the middle point of its current five-game home stand Friday night as the Reading Royals make their final regular season visit of the year to First Arena in 7:35 p.m. face-off. It's Jackals Trading Card Night with the first in a series of three card strips to be given away to the first 2,000 fans through the doors. Good seats still remain for this playoff preview and tickets can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets including the Gray Street box off - First Arena or charge-by-phone at 722-3711 or 734-PUCK (7825).
