March 20, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte N.C. - The Checkers won their fourth consecutive game with a comeback victory over the Augusta Lynx by a score of 4-2.
The Lynx started the scoring in the first stanza when forward, Travis Fuller stationed himself in front of Checkers netminder, Chris Holt and deflected a pass from Matt Auffrey into the net at 11:23. This gave Augusta a 1-0 advantage. The Checkers quickly tied the contest at 12:57 when Blake Bellefeuille redirected a Kenton Smith wrist shot behind Augusta goalie, J.P. Levasseur at 12:51.
It didn't take long for Augusta to retrieve their lead. Auffrey stormed the net and batted in a loose puck in front of Holt 22 second into the second stanza. The net appeared to be dislodged but the official ruled it was a good goal to the dismay of the home crowd. Checkers forward Kaleb Betts tied the game at 2-2 when his shot went in over the glove of Lavasseur at 16:22. The Checkers would capture their first lead of the contest after forward, Tom Pyatt streaked down the right wing side and fired a shot that snuck in on the short-side of Lavasseur at 18:19.
Despite the Augusta goaltender now pulled for the extra attacker, they couldn't muster the tying goal and Charlotte's Bellefeuille would add an empty net tally giving the Checkers a 4-2 win.
Notes: Bobby Goepfert relieved Lavasseur at the start of the third period and didn't surrender a goal...Only Augusta scored a power play goal on their three tries. The Checkers went scoreless on two attempts with the man advantage...the Checkers fourth straight win is a season high.
The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on March 21 against the Gwinnett Gladiators. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $175.
