Jackals Take Command In Division With Well-Rounded Play

Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals catapulted past the Reading Royals to a five point lead in the American East Division with three wins this weekend. The Jackals are at Wheeling on Friday and Saturday, taking on the Nailers, and host the Trenton Devils at First Arena on Sunday at 4:05 p.m.

In the Jackals' trio of victories in their latest three-in-three, the Jackals showed they could win games not only by scoring goals as they have done all season, but also by playing stingy defense. While Elmira leads the league in goals per game with 3.96, the Jackals allowed only three goals all weekend, and, along with goaltender Julien Ellis, contributed for the Jackals first shutout of 2009-2010 on Sunday against the Devils.

The Jackals moved from seventh to fourth in the league in goals against per game this weekend, and the Jackals goals for/goals against ratio leads the league now at 1.30/1.

Now just one game away from the 2/3 mark of the season, the Jackals are playing their best hockey of 2009-2010, having tied their consecutive game streak without a regulation loss at eight. During that streak, the Jackals have outscored their opponents 44-18.

CONNOLLY'S GOAL CONTINUES TO IMPRESS

The video of Brendan Connolly's coast to coast goal on Friday night, in which he skated through all five Wheeling Nailers before beating goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak stick side, continues to wow its viewers.

FIRST SHUTOUT OF THE SEASON

Sunday afternoon's 2-0 blanking by the Jackals of the Devils was the first shutout for Elmira in 2009-2010. The Jackals were the last ECHL team to participate in a game this season involving a shutout, whether for or against. The Devils and the Royals are the only two teams remaining in the league who have not recorded a shutout in 2009-2010.

Elmira has not been shutout since Jan. 9, 2009, when the Jackals lost 3-0 at home to the Johnstown Chiefs.

The Jackals have played in 98 road regular season games since joining the ECHL without being shutout. Their 99th and 100th road games will come this weekend in Wheeling, and could be against Teslak, who was in net last season for the Jackals when they recorded their last shutout prior to Sunday on March 13, 2009 in a 3-0 win at the now-defunct Dayton Bombers. Teslak almost shutout the Jackals in their last regulation loss back on Jan. 17, as the Jackals scored with 61 seconds left in the third period to make it 2-1.

JACKALS SHOOT FOR VICTORY ON VALENTINE'S DAY

The Jackals return home on Sunday, Feb. 14 for a special Valentine's Day game at First Arena. All females in attendance will receive flowers, and all fans in attendance are invited to stick around and skate with the Jackals. The game begins at 4:05 p.m., with the Jackals hosting the Trenton Devils.

THE JACKALS WOULD LIKE TO THANK...

Collins & Walton, proud sponsor of the Elmira Jackals and First Arena. Since 1957, Collins & Walton has been an area leader in mechanical contracting. Collins & Walton is a complete mechanical contractor providing all aspects of mechanical subcontracting.

While Collins & Walton has been a great sponsor of the Elmira Jackals, their most important contribution is the new "Jackals Honorary Captain of the Game," in which one physically challenged child is brought out to center ice for a ceremonial puck drop before each Jackals game at First Arena. That child receives an autographed Jackals jersey and is an event that would not be possible without the help of our friends at Collins & Walton.

PRACTICE SCHEDULE:

Jackals practices are open to the public and are held on the First Arena main rink.

Tuesday: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday: 10:30 a.m.
