Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - Former Florida Everblades goaltender Justin Peters made his NHL debut on Saturday night. Peters stopped 34 shots and allowed just one goal in the Hurricanes 3-1 victory over the New York Islanders. Peters becomes the second former Everblades goaltender in less than a week to make his debut and record a win (Anton Khudobin - Minnesota Feb. 4, 2010). Overall, Peters becomes the 19th Everblade and second this season to appear in the National Hockey League.
Peters, 23, made his debut due to an injury to goaltender Cam Ward, who is scheduled to see a back specialist. The fourth-year professional earned first star honors for his performance. With the victory, the 'Canes won their sixth game in eight tries. Peters was elated after his victory and gave all the praise to his teammates, "I was trying not to think too much and keep it simple as possible," said Peters. "It was a real gutsy effort in front and I can't thank them (his teammates) enough." The 6-foot-1, 213-pound goaltender spent 2007-08 with the Everblades posting a record of 18-10-2 with a 2.57 goals against average and.922 save percentage. In total, he appeared in 32 games with the Florida Everblades from 2006-08. Peters, 23, has been recalled to the NHL five times in his career, though he had yet to see action in an NHL game. He is 18-13-2 with a 2.55 goals-against average and a.916 save percentage in 34 AHL games for Albany this season. The Blythe, Ontario native played in the 2010 AHL All-Star Classic on January 19, stopping nine of 11 shots during the second period of a 10-9 Canadian AHL All-Stars victory. The Hurricanes' second-round selection, 38th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Peters is 54-64-6 with a 2.87 goals-against average in 135 career AHL games over the last three and a half seasons with the River Rats.
