Elmira Jackals News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - January 15, 2013 - The Elmira Jackals defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones by a 3-1 score on Tuesday night at U.S. Bank Arena. The win improved Elmira's record to 19-15-4 on the season.
The Jackals and Cyclones made sure that their final meeting of the regular season got off to a memorable start in the opening period. It wasn't so much because of offensive fireworks, but more due to the fisticuffs that put the fans in a tizzy. Three different fights pitted Kevin Harvey against Andrew Conboy, Darren Kramer against Tommy Lange, and Justin DaCosta against Mathieu Aubin. When the teams had their gloves on, there were good scoring opportunities at both ends of the ice. Elmira grabbed the 1-0 lead just over seven minutes into the game when Louie Caporusso had an Artem Demkov rebound bounce off of his shoulder past Cincinnati goaltender Michael Houser. Dustin Gazley also assisted to extend his point streak to a career-high 11 games. At the other end of the ice, Maxime Clermont stopped 13 Cincinnati shots to let Elmira hold on to the 1-0 at the end of one.
In the second period, Cincinnati made an early bid to take control of the game with Mike Embach providing the tying score. With a cycle going in the left wing corner, Embach got loose in the low slot, took a David Pacan pass and one-timed it past Clermont just 2:51 into the session. Elmira wasted no time in pushing back, though, as Darren Kramer set up Brandon Blandina off of the rush 1:03 after Embach's goal to restore Elmira's lead. The goal was Blandina's second of the season and first since October 13. Despite 15 shots in the second, Cincinnati could not claw itself back into the game thanks to Clermont's work in the crease.
Caporusso ensured that Cincinnati would not have a chance to re-tie the game thanks to an early third period strike. Justin DaCosta carried the puck through center with speed and into Cincinnati ice before moving it to Caporusso in the slot. He cut to his left and slid the puck past Houser for his second of the game and 10th of the season. That put Cincinnati in a bind, but the Cyclones came to life when Kelly Miller was hit with a penalty at 17:10. Houser was pulled for the extra attacker and it was bombs away from there. In the fray, the Jackals were tagged for intentionally knocking the net off of the moorings with 20 seconds to play, and since it was with less than two minutes to go Cincinnati was awarded a penalty shot. Clermont stopped Mathieu Aubin, though, and from there it was victory formation for the Jackals.
Clermont earned this third straight win over Cincinnati, eighth overall, by stopping 38 shots. The Jackals were 0-for-5 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
