Late Glads Comeback Falls Short in SC, 3-1

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jason Clark picked up his first pro goal, but the Gladiators fell behind early and couldn't dig out of the hole dropping a 3-1 decision Tuesday night at North Charleston Coliseum to the South Carolina Stingrays.

Clark hammered home a rebound from in close at the 9:36 mark of the third, cutting the Gladiators deficit to two. Doug Jones picked up the assist, and now has a helper in five straight games.

Jones was forced to play on the blue line thanks to a shortened roster due to AHL call ups. Despite being down two men the Gladiators (25-13-1-1) dominated in the shot column and carried the pace of play through the second half of the game. Gwinnett finished with 34 shots to the Stingrays 20.

Jeff Jakaitis picked up his first win against his former team between the pipes for the Rays (19-19-1-3), while Mike Lee had a three start winning streak snapped.

South Carolina jumped on Gwinnett in the first, scoring two goals just 14 seconds apart from Robby Dee at 11:35 (6, power play) and Andrew Cherniwchan (6) to put the Gladiators down two at first intermission.

Stingrays forward Matt Beca raced down the near wing and snuck a wrister under the blocker of Lee at 3:05 of the second to add to the Gladiators deficit heading into the third.

Gwinnett is next in action Thursday in Greenville at 7:00 p.m. from the Bi-Lo Center.
