Jackals Stay Perfect On The Week With 6-3 Win Over Royals
January 15, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals (19-12-5-0) earned their third-straight win this week with a 6-3 thrashing of the Reading Royals (23-10-2-0) at First Arena on Saturday night. Yannick Tifu had a goal and three assists while Tyler Donati put the game away with two third-period tallies.
Tifu's goal came on a short-handed breakaway at 2:48 of the first period. Corey Cowick sprung Tifu with a pass into the Royals' end, and Tifu backhanded the puck past the stick side of Reading goaltender Michael Hutchinson to make it 1-0. The short-handed goal was Tifu's team-leading second of the season and the club's sixth overall.
In the second period, Tifu fed Brock McBride cutting to the net, and McBride backhanded the puck in from the slot to give Elmira a power-play goal at 3:58, extending the lead to 2-0. Andrew Sweetland then wristed a puck in at 5:25 from the right circle on a feed from Tyler Donati to give the Jackals a 3-0 cushion.
Rob Kwiet countered for Reading at 10:26 off of a faceoff win by Casey Haines by driving the puck past the glove of Marco Cousineau from the left-wing side to put Reading on the board, 3-1.
The Jackals, however, removed any doubt in the third period with three quick strikes. Tyler Donati wristed a puck past Hutchinson from the right circle on a pass from Tifu 33 seconds in and then wrapped a puck in from behind the net at 2:42 of the final frame to make it 5-1. A.J. Perry drove a puck in from the slot on a McBride feed at 8:09 to put Elmira up 6-1.
Reading countered with two late goals from Ben Gordon, extending his point streak to eight games (8g-5a), but the Jackals denied the Royals the rest of the way and won, 6-3. The loss ended Reading's point-earning streak at nine games.
Elmira received another strong effort Cousineau, improving to 12-6-4-0 with 37 saves on 40 shots. Hutchinson fell to 3-1-1-0 on 23 saves.
The Jackals try to extend their winning streak to four games when they host the Toledo Walleye on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at First Arena. For tickets, call (607) 734-PUCK (7825), visit the First Arena Box Office, or log onto JackalsHockey.com.
