Jackals Complete Deadline Deal

The Elmira Jackals announced Friday that they have acquired defenseman Derick Martin from the Alaska Aces in exchange for left winger Jarrett Konkle. The move occurred just hours before the ECHL's trade deadline.

"Our acquisition of Derick gives us a steady, experienced defenseman who will help us out over the next few weeks as we make our final push toward the playoffs," Jackals coach Steve Martinson said.

Martin is in his sixth professional season and has played with the Aces since 2007-2008. In last season's Kelly Cup Playoffs, Martin led the National Conference Champion Aces wtih a +12 in 21 games. During his first season with the Aces, Martin topped the team with a +18 in only 27 games.

The Timmons, Ontario native has ECHL experience with three other teams. Prior to skating with the Aces, Martin played nine games with the Texas Wildcatters in 2006-2007, where he was a teammate of Jackals captain Olivier Proulx, and 57 games for the Columbia Inferno in that same season. He played in 71 games for the Long Beach Ice Dogs in 2005-2006.

Martin began his professional career in 2004-2005 with the Lubbock Cotton Kings of the CHL. He also has 16 games of AHL experience with the Providence Bruins and the Peoria Rivermen.

Konkle scored nine goals and had 16 assists in 30 games with the Jackals after being acquired by the Jackals from the Johnstown Chiefs on Dec. 17.
