Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

For the first time this season the Albuquerque Isotopes (6-8) have strung together consecutive wins after the 'Topes emerged victorious from a tight, 6-4 contest over the Iowa Cubs (7-7) Wednesday night at Isotopes Park.

Much like last night's game, most of the action occurred in the early innings when Albuquerque leapt to a quick two-run advantage in the second inning when Jeff Baisley singled to center field and immediately scored on a deep two-run homer from Tim Federowicz that gave the home team a quick 2-0 lead.

Iowa retaliated the next inning with a two-run home run of its own from Luis Valbuena. The following batter, Anthony Rizzo, was hit by a pitch from 'Topes hurler Fernando Nieve, resulting in an ejection for Albuquerque's starter after just 2.2 innings-pitched with three runs allowed. Will Savage came on in relief with two outs in the third and promptly surrendered Nieve's final run on a Welington Castillo double that brought home Rizzo and gave Iowa a 3-2 edge.

From that point on, however, Savage (3-0) was in complete control, cruising through 4.1 scoreless innings in which he yielded just two hits and walk to become the first Isotopes pitcher to win three games this season.

With Savage shutting down the Cubs, the Isotopes found their way on the scoreboard again with their second home run of the night. With Josh Fields on third and Scott Van Slyke on first, Baisley crushed the ball over the fence in left-center to suddenly put the "˜Topes back on top 5-3.

'Topes outfielder Matt Angle had struggled of late with only one hit in his previous 14 at-bats before giving Albuquerque an insurance run in the eighth with an RBI triple that scored Luis Cruz and propelled the 'Topes to a 6-3 edge after eight. Angle's only hit during that span was also a triple, which he belted two days ago against Omaha on April 16.

Iowa would score once more in the ninth on an RBI single by former Isotope Edgar Gonzalez, but that's all reliever Scott Rice (2) would allow, slamming the door on the I-Cubs to earn his second save of the season in a 6-4 Albuquerque win.

The "˜Topes will look to stay undefeated in their series with the Cubs on Thursday, with right-hander John Ely (0-1, 8.00) taking the rubber to face Iowa's lefty, Travis Wood (1-0, 4.91) in a 6:35 PM start from Isotopes Park.

Albuquerque's opening homestand continues with two more games against the Iowa Cubs, including a Friday night tilt that promises to be the perfect cap to eight great games. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or online at www.abqisotopes.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
