Iowa Cubs News Release
Albuquerque, NM - Anthony Rizzo recorded his third multi-homer game of the season, but the Albuquerque Isotopes (7-8) edged the Iowa Cubs (7-8) 4-3 at Isotopes Park tonight. The Cubs have lost three straight games for the first time this season and are now 2-5 on this road trip.
The Cubs took an early lead when Rizzo launched his first home run with Edgar Gonzalez on base in the top of the first inning off Isotopes' starter John Ely.
The 'Topes came back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the second against Cubs' starter Travis Wood. Josh Fields led off with a wind-blown homer down the right field line for the first run. With one out, Jeff Baisley walked and then scored on a two-out double by Josh Bard.
Rizzo's second home run came leading off the top of the fourth. It was his third home run off Ely this season. Rizzo also went deep against the right-hander as part of a two-homer game at Principal Park on April 9. The Cubs' slugger leads the PCL with seven home runs this season. Ely allowed just two more singles and worked through the seventh inning for his longest outing of the year.
The 'Topes tied the game again in the sixth inning. With one out, Trent Oeltjen doubled and scored on a base hit by Jerry Sands. In the bottom of the seventh, Baisley reached on a leadoff single and advanced to second on a one-out single by Luis Cruz. Joe Becker, pinch-hitting for Ely, blooped a base hit into shallow right-center to drive in Baisley with the go-ahead run. That chased Wood from the game. Jeff Beliveau came in and got Elian Herrera to hit into an inning-ending double play. He also pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
The 'Topes bullpen held the lead. Wil Ledezma pitched a perfect eighth inning and Josh Wall set the Cubs down in order in the ninth for his fourth save. The Isotopes' bullpen has allowed just one earned run in 11.2 innings in this series. Ely (1-1) earned the win and Wood (1-1) suffered the loss.
The Cubs and Isotopes wrap up this series tomorrow night at 8:05 PM Central Time. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com. Deene Ehlis and Randy Wehofer have the call with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 7:45.
