Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
NEED TO KNOW: A two-run home run from Kyle Parker in the first inning gave the Albuquerque Isotopes (9-5) all the wiggle room they needed Wednesday night at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, WA, as right-hander Chad Bettis led the Isotopes to a 5-3 victory against the Tacoma Rainiers (4-10).
DECIDING MOMENT: Six of the Isotopes nine wins this season have come when Albuquerque scores first, and that was the winning formula once again Wednesday night. After a leadoff walk to Brandon Barnes, Kyle Parker survived a nine-pitch at-bat and smashed a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall to give the Topes an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning. Tacoma answered with a run in the second, but Albuquerque added a pair of runs in the third courtesy of a Dustin Garneau double and another run in the fourth thanks to a Barnes solo shot.
YOU BETTIS BELIEVE IT: Right-hander Chad Bettis earned his third start for the Isotopes and turned in a stellar performance. After allowing a solo home run in the second, Bettis settled in for four consecutive scoreless frames, surrendering only a single hit during that span. He finished the game with 7.0 innings pitched, three hits, two runs (both earned), two walks and four strikeouts. Bettis picked up his second win of the season.
EARLY OFFENSE: First inning runs have been the Isotopes friend all season long. After a pair of runs in the first on Wednesday, Albuquerque has now scored 23 of its 80 runs (29 percent) in the opening frame. In contrast, the Topes have only allowed 12 first inning runs. On this road trip alone, the Isotopes have scored 16 runs in the first through just six games, including six runs through two games in this series. Albuquerque hasn't scored more than 12 runs in any other inning.
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT: The Isotopes only used four hits to score five runs Wednesday evening. Three of those hits were extra-base knocks. Kyle Parker picked up Albuquerque's first hit, a two-run blast in the first. Dustin Garneau added their second hit in the third, a two-RBI double to put the Topes up 4-1. A Brandon Barnes solo shot in the fourth was the final Isotopes extra-base hit. Joey Wong added a single in the ninth.
ON DECK: The Isotopes and Rainiers will square off in game three of their four-game set Thursday night at 8:05 p.m. MT. Albuquerque will send left-hander Chris Rusin (1-0, 9.00) to the mound, while Tacoma will go with lefty Mike Montgomery (0-1, 6.23).
IN THE HOLE: Following Albuquerque's four-game set in Tacoma, the Isotopes will continue their season-longest 12-game, 13-day road trip to Las Vegas for a four-game series against the Las Vegas, 51s. The Topes return home on April 30 to host the Salt Lake Bees.
