Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Nashville, Tenn. - The Oklahoma City Dodgers piled up four runs in the second inning and received a strong outing from David Huff in first start with OKC in a 4-2 victory over the Nashville Sounds Thursday night at First Tennessee Park.
With the win, the Dodgers have taken the first three games of their series in Nashville and have won six of seven on the road trip, running their record to a league-best 12-3 mark. The victory was also their fifth straight over the Sounds.
Just as they did the previous night, the Dodgers took an early 4-0 lead. However the difference Thursday was that all four runs came in one inning, as the Dodgers scored four times in the second.
The first run crossed when Scott Schebler picked up a RBI on a fielder's choice. After Matt Carson drew a walk to load the bases, Elliot Johnson hit a two-run single to center field to make it 3-0. Darnell Sweeney capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
The four-run cushion proved to be more than enough, as three OKC lefties combined to hold the Sounds to two runs and six hits. Making a start in place of Mike Bolsinger, Huff (1-0) tossed 6.2 innings, allowing two runs and five hits. He struck out six batters and walked one. During one stretch between the fourth seventh innings, Huff retired 10 consecutive batters.
Nashville (7-8) got on the board in the fourth inning, collecting three singles. Niuman Romero's RBI single cut OKC's lead to 4-1.
The Sounds were able edge closer in the seventh. With the bases empty and two outs, four consecutive Nashville batters drew walks to score their second run. Of the four walks, two were to batters who were at point down in the count 0-2.
With the bases still loaded with two outs, OKC Dodgers reliever Ryan Buchter regrouped and struck out Max Muncy to end the inning and keep OKC ahead, 4-2.
Buchter remained in the game and kept Nashville off the board in the eighth inning. Danny Coulombe wrapped up the win by retiring the Sounds in order in the ninth and registered two strikeouts while earning his first save of the season.
Nashville starting pitcher Brad Mills picked up the loss for the third time in as many start to begin his season. Over six innings, Mills (0-3) allowed four runs and five hits with three walks and three strikeouts, as the OKC Dodgers defeated Mills for the second time this year.
The Dodgers finish their series in Nashville Friday night at 7:05 p.m., aiming to sweep the four-game set. Live coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on AM 1340 "The Game", 1340thegame.com, or through the iHeartRadio mobile app.
