Z's Use Six Run First Inning and Beat Iowa 9-2

Des Moines, Iowa - Austin Wates had three hits and drove home three runs as the New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Iowa Cubs 9-2 to win their second consecutive game.

The Z's used a six run first inning to jump out in front of Iowa and cruised to the win. Wates drilled a base clearing double scoring three runs and Scott Sizemore hammered a two run home run in the inning.

Pat Misch was terrific in his first start since July of 2013. He worked five shutout innings allowed two hits and earned the win.

The Z's improved its record to 6-8 on the season.

GAME NOTES

New Orleans has won two in a row for the first time this season.  The Z's will attempt to win their first series of the year on Friday. Miguel Rojas extended his hitting streak to ten games with a pair of hits on Thursday. Vinny Rottino added two hits and extended his hit streak to seven games.

The Zephyrs open an eight game home stand on Saturday against Nashville. The probable starter for Nashville is former American League Cy Young award winner Barry Zito. He is set to face Justin Nicolino.

The Zephyrs and Iowa conclude a four game set on Friday. First pitch is set for 7:08pm. The Z's will start RH Andre Rienzo against RH Barrett Loux. Radio: WMTI 106.1 FM
