DES MOINES, Iowa (April 23, 2015) - Iowa (6-8) allowed six runs in the first inning en route to a 9-2 loss to New Orleans (6-8) Thursday afternoon in Pacific Coast League action at Principal Park.
Jordany Valdespin got the Zephyrs started with a leadoff double. Two batters later, he came around to score on a Cole Gillespie sacrifice fly. With two outs, Cubs starter Jeff Antigua (0-1) got Justin Bour to pop up to third-baseman Christian Villanueva who dropped the ball to keep the inning alive. New Orleans capitalized, proceeding to score five more unearned runs to take a 6-0 lead.
That was all the Zephyrs would need, as starter Pat Misch (1-0) shutout the Cubs on two hits in 5.0 innings in his first start since 2013 after undergoing Tommy John surgery last season.
Antigua, making his first Iowa start since 2013 and first of the year for the Cubs, allowed nine runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits and four walks. He struck out two and allowed a two-run home run to Scott Sizemore.
Iowa managed two runs in the eighth inning on a Chris Valaika two-run home run off New Orleans left-hander Fabian WIlliamson.
Righty Andres Santiago made his Triple-A debut for Iowa, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts in relief of Antigua. Right-hander Michael Wagner made his second Triple-A appearance with a scoreless eighth and right-hander Armando Rivero finished it off with a scoreless ninth.
The Iowa pitching staff walked seven Z's hitters, and have walked 23 batters in the first three games of the series.
Villanueva had two errors on the day, and has now committed three since joining Iowa April 17.
The I-Cubs will host the New Orleans Zephyrs in the final game of a four-game set on Friday, with a first pitch set for 7:08 p.m. CT at Principal Park. Right-hander Barret Loux (0-1, 3.12) will make his third start on the year opposite Zephyrs right-hander Andre Rienzo (0-1, 3.72). The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live streamed at Iowacubs.com. The On-Deck Circle Pre-game Show will begin 6:40 p.m. CT.
