Memphis Redbirds News Release

OMAHA, Neb. - The Redbirds jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but were not able to hold on, as the Storm Chasers scattered 16 hits, enabling Omaha to come away with the victory.

Things looked promising early on for Memphis, as the Redbirds put up three runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a double off the bat of Xavier Scruggs (1-4, 2B, RBI), scoring Ed Easley (2-2, R, 2 BB). After a fielding error by Omaha allowed Stephen Piscotty (0-4, R) to reach base and with Scruggs aboard, Scott Moore (1-3, 2 RBI, BB) was able to drive home his teammates with a base hit to right field. The Redbirds would not score again until the ninth inning.

The Omaha victory marks the first time the Storm Chasers have defeated the Redbirds when Memphis sends starter Tyler Lyons (1-1, 4.61) to the hill. The Redbirds had been 5-0 in match-ups which saw the southpaw start against the back-to-back Triple-A National Champions.

Lyons would go on to record a no-decision in the contest, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits over 3.2 innings, while striking out five and walking three. Tyler Waldron (0-2, 9.39) took the loss for the Redbirds, with the big blow coming on a three-run home run by Storm Chaser first baseman Cheslor Cuthbert in the sixth inning.

Dean Kiekhefer (0-0, 3.38) and Marcus Hatley (0-1, 3.18) were able to hold the Storm Chasers to six runs over the final 2.2 innings.

The Redbirds made it interesting in the ninth inning, as they rallied yet again in the contest's final frame. With Cody Stanley (0-4, R) and Ty Kelly (0-0, PH BB) aboard, Rafael Ortega (2-4, 2B, 2RBI) delivered a two-run double to left field, bringing the Redbirds to within a run of tying the game. Manager Mike Shildt would turn to the newest member of his club, Alex Mejia (0-1). The 24 year old infielder was promoted to Memphis earlier in the day, and arrived just before game time. However, the Memphis rally fell short, and Mejia grounded out to end the contest.

The Redbirds and Storm Chasers will wrap up their four game set Friday evening from Werner Park.John Gast (0-2, 8.31) gets the nod for the Redbirds and will be opposed by Clayton Mortensen (2-0, 0.82). First pitch for the series finale is set for 7:05 p.m.
